I just finished reading the book "I Break for Meltdowns: How to Handle the Most Exasperating Behavior of Your 2- to 5-year-old" and I really think I have hit the jackpot.
I have picked out my favorite solutions in the book:
Problem: My daughter blows a whistle, or a scream at the top of her lungs to the point migraine medication isn't enough.
Book's Solution: Tell the child that the action hurts your ears/head and tell her she can go to another room if she is going to make those noises.
Child's Response: Success! She stopped blowing her whistle, because she didn't want to hurt her mommy's head.
Problem: My daughter misbehaves at the grocery store.
Book's Solution: Give your child a grocery list of things that she is responsible for.
Child's Response: Success! We put her in charge of finding and picking up her milk. We made it a game, and even when in the dog food aisle, we would ask her if she can see any milk yet.
Problem: My daughter won't go to sleep in her own room. She protests when I leave the room.
Book's Solution: Give her a light wand or flashlight that she can turn off by herself.
Child's Response: Success! She had gotten a flashlight that has interchangeable tips that shine different things on her ceiling. Unfortunately, the dog ate it, so she has to use the one that came with her tent. But I had a good time telling her to shine it on her door, or shine it on her dresser. It was a good way to teach her how to say and understand the things in her room.
These is just three tips that I have latched onto from this book. I GUARANTEE if you have a toddler, you will benefit from this read. It was so easy to read, even with the distractions from animals, child and husband, that I was actually able to retain some of the information and use it. There are literally thousands of solutions to any problem you may have: taking turns, sharing, getting angry, manipulation, brushing teeth, and the list goes on.
I can't begin to say how much I love this book. I am going to keep it handy, so I can read up when I come upon the new and exciting behaviors my daughter has yet to unleash.
