Eco friendly/Cost effective light bulb question

I went to Home Depot earlier under the impression that I was just going to pick up some new light bulbs to replace the old ones that I have. I would like the new bulbs that both are eco friendly, and also cut costs.
Appearently at Home Depot, there are hundreds that fit this bill. So I pose a question to y'all, what kind of light bulbs should I be getting? I have a regular light socket like you screw the old light bulb into if that makes a difference.

As an aside, I find it particularly amusing that I'm asking for shopping advice. I'm usually the one giving it out.  Thanks in advance!

We switched to the CF (I think thats the name) ones that came out a few years ago and they're great. They haven't burned out yet and they cut back on the electric bill.

I'm sticking with the old kind. Many of the new brands contain mercury, which can not only poison the land when they break; it can poison you, too.

I heard on TV that they don't even have as much mercury as the old thermometers, and you shouldn't have to throw them out often if they last as long as they say.

We're trying cfs that are equivalent to 100 watts. They seem brighter, yet there's an odd quality to the light. I'm not sure I'm sold yet.

We noticed a difference in our electric bill when we switched to mainly CFL. There is a small amount of mercury in them, thus should be disposed of with care.

The new ones that are suppose to save money cause me to have migraines. So I still buy the old ones.

I usually get the generic brand from my grocery store ... they work great and none of them have burned out yet. And if you're worried about the mercury, there are special places where you can recycle them that are equipped to handle it.
