I am in the middle of reading the book, Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and have come across some really great quotes that have challenged my thinking and made me seriously contemplate what truths I believe.
I came across this quote and I took some extra time to think about it:
"When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kinds of dogmas or goals, it's always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt."
I often have believed that the people who are often the most against something, are often exactly what they hate. It seems a part of human nature. I have seen the biggest homophobes turn out to be gay. I have met pro-lifers who have had abortions. I have read about the Boy Scout leader who advocated child safety and was found to be a pedofile.
I am not saying that every person who is passionate about one particular view point is a fraud, but more often than not passion comes from issues that we wish we could resolve within ourselves. How do you feel about this? Is there anything that you have feverishly intense feelings about that actually you have doubt in and are trying to prove to yourself? Or have you taken a stand against something, just because you were afraid to acknowledge that part of your own life?

Funny! That reminds me of an old friend who had religious bumper stickers, but would flip off "maniac drivers" on the road, then speed past them. I told him he should take those stickers off his car. He was making Jesus look bad. :-) He laughed... and he quit flipping people off.
Not because of ignorance and/or indecision, but because the facts and truth call for a "balance" ... (+=-)>(+/-) ... the teeter -totter of life works better when the fulcrum point elevates the center. :-)
Joe, I'm independent because I am somewhere left of the Democratic Party. The last bumper sticker before this year was for Chuck Percy for senator, because the Democrats put up a serious ya-hoo that year. This year I put a sticker that says "PDP" in a swirl. It's a logo for a brand of drums (manufactured by DW Drums) that one of my sons is learning on. Yeah, I'm trying to encourage him. But I'll try not to cut you off on the Reagan next time we find ourselves there.
Faith is a heart condition, not a head condition. If you're having to try too hard you have to step back and figure out why.... :)
Joe,
That is an interesting study. I will have to check it out.
"Paying it forward"!

Great article. Paying it forward.
I've always meant to read that book.
