In the course of coming up with black and white still life photos for the Intense Photography Challenge July contest, I've been wracking my brain for compositional ideas. Last night I came up with the idea of compositions based on the four classical elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. These are my first try. I'll keep on working on this, I think.

Roy,

The composition of Earth spoke to me the most. Our eyes follow the lines of the urn to the top. Then, it follows the shadow of the urn back down to the Earth.
The beeswax candle was a nice touch for texture in the Fire element.

I like the idea of the feathers for Air. Maybe if you turned a fan on them? You'll definitely need an assistant to help with that one.

I really like this arrangement. I visited a spa resort earlier this year that had a meditation garden built upon these elements. It was lovely.

Hey, the other day I was roaming around Governor Hutchinson's field in Milton, Mass and I discovered pheasant feathers. They were absolutely gorgeous and I started collecting some for you when all of a sudden I startled the pheasant and he/she flew away. I wish I had your lenses.

Amazing work Roy. My favorite in this group is the Air, the arrangement of the incense is a nice touch, I am not quite sure what you have them stuck in, but I find it very interesting to look at. Plus the pattern on the vase is very 'moving' as spirals are, and really gives a feel of air.

Thank you for helping me wake up my sleeping spiritual side, this was refreshing.
