StOOpid camera
Ina's camera is WAY smarter than mine, I have decided. I wanted to do a photo essay yesterday - but my camera forgot how to display pictures. Was getting NOTHING on the screen at all - no menu, no picture, nothing but black. It still worked - but it refused to allow me to see what I was taking pictures of. There is a hole that LOOKS like a viewfinder on it - and according to the manual the EVF/LCD button SHOULD let me SEE through it ... but that wasn't working either.
So - I could only take mystery pictures, with no way of knowing if they were focussed or not. Very annoying. (Although all 3 of the ones I tried while I was effectively 'blind' turned out, surprisingly enough).
I went through Kodak's troubleshooting guide and online database and all of that fun stuff and that was pretty much useless - the troubleshooting guide kept ending up at you need to send the camera in for service but if you don't have proof of purchase, you'll have to pay for it (of course, I don't have a CLUE where the receipt would be)... but since the display screen COULD work when the camera was plugged into the computer, I really didn't believe them. If it was mechanical it shouldn't work at all, right?
Most of the possible fixes mentioned on the website started with Press the Menu button and then.... if nothing shows on the display, how am I supposed to use the on-screen menu, hmmmmmmm? That's right up there with the Rogers Customer ~Support~ line you call when your Internet doesn't work - tells you to try online support @ .... DUH!
Anyway...eventually I tripped over a mention of upgrading the camera's firmware. Downloaded it, ran it, and ta dah! My camera can see again.
Spiderman
Ross' new job (spraying for spiders/pest control) seems to be working very well even though it does require that he (we) get up way earlier in the morning than either of us are used to, or would choose to.
He's working full time until the end of September; possibly into October depending on weather and bats. Apparently, relocating bats is sometimes a very lucrative job in the fall - they're not allowed to kill them though; good thing, y'ask me. I like our bats.
Job is good. Money is good. But, at least at first, he won't be coming to Peterborough with me. That is not good.
But since I've pretty much - at least so far - managed to manipulate my schedule into being all squished into Monday - Wednesday - it is not that big a deal. I will likely need to stay until Friday anyway - at least at first - because that is when they hold the weekly TA meetings .... but those don't last forever, apparently. Anyway ... we'll sort it out. Definitely seems a housekeeping suite in a motel is the way to go re: housing though.
Eventually we - he - will have to make a decision about the store... for now, we - with the help of Suey - are trying to cover it ... mostly just to try to hang onto the beer return contract until we're sure that we (or whoever rents/buys the store?) don't want it ...but OMG what a PITA (pain in the arse) that is.
We had 4 people to load the truck yesterday - Suey & I & the 2 guys from the beer co. and it still took more than 3 hours. And it was SO not fun!
Psychology
Got email back from the prof (finally - I really gots to get me one of those online prof jobs!) ....and it was in fact the wrong quiz. The problem has been fixed and I'm to redo it today. I'm ready to do the 2nd as well, so barring any more ~surprises~ I will get them both done today, and hopefully the other 3 over the next week or so.
Doing the course in Adolescent Psychology - while frustrating because of the mix-up and because I really do expect a much more reasonable response time to my queries (more than a week to answer an email or mark a test is NOT reasonable in my world - especially not when I'm paying a lot of $$ for the course) - has led me to consider a number of alternatives for my grad school research project(s).
Rather leaning towards focusing on emerging adults rather than adolescents. Have to play with that some more - and see what's out there already, as I need to come up with something not already done.
Grant Application
My application made it past the initial vetting and is on its way to the jury for reading. Which means that writing for the local community magazine was enough to have me considered a professional writer for their purposes. Liking that :)
Housework
Yuck! If we're both working/busy who the heck is going to do the housework around here?
That was one good thing about Ross being home every morning... he did the floors and stuff. Now he's gone to work and I'm home and my brother is in the area and might be around later and guess who gets to tidy up and at least find the kitchen table and counters? Won't be doing much more than that though - my back still hasn't settled down from the beer thing ... and painkillers only go so far (and make me stOOpid especially on considerably less than a full night's sleep).
Birds
My baby robins are gone - they flew away a couple of days ago; one was gone by the time I got here, but I did manage to get a shot of the second before it left.

You like bats? They could almost be up there on my list with ticks and snakes.
mine is too, Wilma...but only when it actually works!
I was going to town with the vacuum, even did the screen on the balcony door and then noticed the clean filter thing was on.
I had to find the vacuum cleaner manual and try and figure out how to do it. So vacuuming will be resumed tomorrow. I have to much other piddling that I need to do.
I do the dishes, cooking, shopping and laundry .... he's the tidier and put-stuff-away-er .... and usually the one that does the floors, cuz I don't do it "right" enough for him.
Cleaning up his pile of sunflower seed shells for the third day in a row does not make me happy. Fixed that though.... ain't no more sunflower seeds around here! (Is salt bad for squirrels?)
but what the heck ... it pays... and he's happy
Loved the camera story. I can't believe your perseverance -- and that you actually succeeded in fixing it.
Emerging adults are the 18 - 25 age group according to my text Ginny ... becoming more recognized as a separate 'group' in part because of puperty - and therefore adolescence starts so much earlier than it used to
Ah, sounds like things are starting to fall into place...it may not be the places you want them, but that happens.
not in that room ... they'd be in the insulated space over the other part of the house Tamara.... the part Ross set on fire that time
I'm still struggling to learn my camera, too. Now I'm glad I didn't go for the SLR.

Now THAT is MUCH better.
thanks for the concern it is appreciated
Glad you got yours working; that Ross has employment; that the birds are doing well; the grant application continuing AND YOUR MARKS. Congratulations but I'm sure you did very well even on the wrong test.
I have to have the housework done right after work on Fridays so know the routine. Hope you had a bit of a visit.
A freaking bird.
Hmmph!
Glad to hear that everything is coming together, I think Ross will be so much happier working even if he isn't going to Peterborough right away. Doesn't sound like you will be spending all your time there anyway.
Talk about busy, guess who is now the manager of Mandy's soccer team and trainer for her Hockey team. Joke is definitely on me.
*ducks in anticipation of a flying something-or-other*
Thanks for sharing your highs and (camera) lows, bird. Shouldn't we be writing something right now?
My camera is smarter than I am. It tends to outsmart me at least 60% of the time.
We had a professor in graduate school who didn't turn in our grades for over 4 months, so a week seemed quick to me. But, c'mon, how hard could it be to grade 15 questions?
