In May you wore remembrance icons in honor of Memorial Day. In June you waved flag icons to celebrate Independence Day. This month the Support Veterans group is providing you with four new icons to show your support of soldiers and veterans, no matter the occasion. By participating, you could be our daily points winner.

Right-click on any of the icons below, save it to your computer and then upload it as the main image in your Gather profile. Here's what you can choose from:

Support family, friends, and other soldiers currently serving in the military.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d198/d813/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Support our veterans who are living and those who have passed.
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d199/d813/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Are you a veteran or active service member? Proudly wear this icon!

http://media-files.gather.com/images/d200/d813/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Are you a member of the Support Veterans group on Gather? Or are you a supporter of Paralyzed Veterans of America? This is the icon for you!
http://media-files.gather.com/images/d201/d813/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

You could receive 500 points for your participation! Here's how it works:

  1. If you're not already a member, join Veterans.gather.com
  2. Upload one of the four icons above as the main photo in your profile
  3. Leave a comment below to tell us why you chose that icon.
Every day between now and July 31st Gather will randomly select one member to receive 500 Gather points!* You have the option of donating your points to Paralyzed Veterans of America.

*These Gather points cannot be used towards becoming a cash earner.

I selected veteran in support of my father in law, who has passed away. Normally, I don't do contests on Gather, but this one is important to me.

Several other members of my family have served and some are serving at this time.

I chose mine beacuse my grandfather served in the army and I have a cousin currently in the Navy. Hubby (Trevor M) didn't mention in his post that he served in the Air Force.

I also chose mine because to me the hand over the heart is such a huge sign of respect and it has the flag.

I chose my icon because, I support the troops and all the veterans.

I lost someone who was like a son to me in Iraq in 2004 (he was ambushed) and I know a few good men who have passed away. 3 to be exact. My uncle, my neighbor and my father in law all veterans who have passed on.

I chose my icon because . . .

I am a Navy veteran, although I served for a very very short time. I did what I could, though, and my heart was fully in it. I would make the same choice to enlist again, even knowing that I would develop Crohn's Disease while on active duty. My husband is also a veteran and currently contracts for the Army after ending active duty last October.

I choose the 'Support the Troops' icon because they are 'Warriors' who have
served and who are now serving. These men and women,
have served , protected , and even helped me grow .

What can I give to those who have given me everything?

They do it daily by giving up homes, families, careers, and even their
own bodies or lives?

Gratitude? In my small way this little icon tells exactly how I feel and is a fraction of my thanks to the troops..

I chose Support The Troops because I have been a military wife for almost 17 years. During that time I have been a family support group leader for my husbands unit while he was deployed to Iraq. I believe support the troops also includes supporting their family that are left behind. I think that makes it just a little easier for a soldier to leave knowing that there is someone at home who is helping to take care of their family. Supporting our troops just comes natural to me. I have always supported out troops no matter what. It is our duty as Americans to stand behind those who serve and fight to ensure that we continue to have our freedoms. These men and women volunteer to put their lives on the line everyday to do a job that they are told to do even if they don't always believe in the cause. The very least we can do is support them.

Man, it was hard to decide which icon to go with! I opted for the "Proud to Serve" as I am a proud veteran!

USN 1973 - 1977 and USNR 1980 - 1985

I also served as a Navy wife for twenty of my huband's twenty one years:

USN-Ret 1972 - 1993

I picked Speedy because he was the most "fun". I try to be light hearted on Gather and he seemed the most upbeat. Plus it's really the icon that PVA has made popular, I want everyone to know I am supporting them. :-)

I support the troops and veterans. Both my grandfathers served in WW2 - one in the Navy and the other in the Army. The one in the army served with the 4th Infantry Division and he hit Utah Beach on D-Day and fought until the end of the war. An interesting story...Hemmingway was embedded with his unit for a short time during the war. My other grandfather served on a few ships and one was hit by a kamikazee, which I have the photo of the plane going into the ship. It was taken by a neighboring ship and the pictures were given out to all of the crew. Needless to say I was raised around VFW halls and I have lots of war stories. Maybe this is a good spot to share them. They embedded in me the importance of what the soldiers did then and that carries over to my support of the troops today.

Speedy you know me always seem to go outside the box a bit. But when I saw the sub heading Honoring Americas Hero's this guy came to mind. I really didnt know if he was ever a Vet but a hero yes he was. But the only thing I can post is his obituary as he died less than a year ago. So lets all take a moment to remember an average guy who put himself in harms way doing what he considered was his job. The following is from the NY Times.

Thanks for the Forum to remember an American Hero.

Richard Jewell, 44, Hero of Atlanta Attack, Dies

By KEVIN SACK
ATLANTA, Aug. 29 — Richard A. Jewell, whose transformation from heroic security guard to Olympic bombing suspect and back again came to symbolize the excesses of law enforcement and the news media, died Wednesday at his home in Woodbury, Ga. He was 44.

The cause of death was not released, pending the results of an autopsy that will be performed Thursday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. But the coroner in Meriwether County, about 60 miles southwest of here, said that Mr. Jewell died of natural causes and that he had battled serious medical problems since learning he had diabetes in February.

The coroner, Johnny E. Worley, said that Mr. Jewell's wife, Dana, came home from work Wednesday morning to check on him after not being able to reach him by telephone. She found him dead on the floor of their bedroom, he said. Mr. Worley said Mr. Jewell had suffered kidney failure and had had several toes amputated since the diabetes diagnosis.

"He just started going downhill ever since," Mr. Worley said.

The heavy-set Mr. Jewell, with a country drawl and a deferential manner, became an instant celebrity after a bomb exploded in Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta in the early hours of July 27, 1996, at the midpoint of the Summer Games. The explosion, which propelled hundreds of nails through the darkness, killed one woman, injured 111 people and changed the mood of the Olympiad.

Only minutes earlier, Mr. Jewell, who was working a temporary job as a guard, had spotted the abandoned green knapsack that contained the bomb, called it to the attention of the police, and started moving visitors away from the area. He was praised for the quick thinking that presumably saved lives.

But three days later, he found himself identified in an article in The Atlanta Journal as the focus of police attention, leading to several searches of his apartment and surveillance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and by reporters who set upon him, he would later say, "like piranha on a bleeding cow."

The investigation by local, state and federal law enforcement officers lasted until late October 1996 and included a number of bungled tactics, including an F.B.I. agent's effort to question Mr. Jewell on camera under the pretense of making a training film.

In October 1996, when it became obvious that Mr. Jewell had not been involved in the bombing, the Justice Department formally cleared him.

"The tragedy was that his sense of duty and diligence made him a suspect," said John R. Martin, one of Mr. Jewell's lawyers. "He really prided himself on being a professional police officer, and the irony is that he became the poster child for the wrongly accused."

In 2005, Eric R. Rudolph, a North Carolina man who became a suspect in the subsequent bombing of an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Ala., pleaded guilty to the Olympic park attack. He is serving a life sentence.

Even after being cleared, Mr. Jewell said he never felt he could outrun his notoriety. He sued several major news media outlets and won settlements from NBC and CNN. His libel case against his primary nemesis, Cox Enterprises, the Atlanta newspaper's parent company, wound through the courts for a decade without resolution, though much of it was dismissed along the way.

After memories of the case subsided, Mr. Jewell took jobs with several small Georgia law enforcement agencies, most recently as a Meriwether County sheriff's deputy in 2005. Col. Chuck Smith, the chief deputy, called Mr. Jewell "very, very conscientious" and said he also served as a training officer and firearms instructor.

Mr. Jewell is survived by his wife and by his mother, Barbara.

Last year, Mr. Jewell received a commendation from Gov. Sonny Perdue, who publicly thanked him on behalf of the state for saving lives at the Olympics.

I changed my icon out of respect to the men and women who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces. I'm a photographer and could have my smiling face or a cute daschund puppy (we have 4 right now) as my icon, but when you think about it the "sacrifice" of changing your icon for a few days is totally insignificant compared to what they're doing. It's a token of respect that I'm more than happy to do. They deserve our support and respect.

God Bless America, the troops, and their families!

Is there anyone (besides the US government, maybe) who doesn't support veterans? Or our troops for that matter?

Good question, Janna. To me, these well-intentioned plans have the potential to turn into things like the lapel pin controversy, or choosing to give blood the day everyone else will notice and not any other day. They provide an easy way for some to grab attention for something that they might only do because everyone else is, and/or to accuse anyone who doesn't care about symbolism but cares, votes, and advocates every day for the cause of not being on board.

I served, one uncle served, one grandfather served, a great-uncle served - and I am proud of the troops ((**and their families!**))

I celebrate and honor in a variety of ways, but something else is in my spotlight at the moment.

Sorry. Not gonna do it. I disagree completely with this kind of effort to homogenize this site, regardless how well-intended. I fully agree with your sentiments--supporting the troops and veterans (one of which I am), etc. However, I appreciate being able to see what the people whose words I'm reading look like (and Carol, you're a truly adorable mutt ), or their other expressions of creativity and imagination.

Sorry, folks, you're going to be stuck looking at my mug in perpetuity.

Hi Paul. I'm thinking I may give it a try, given that 500 points would be enought to get the $25 Home Depot card I plan to use to finish lining the closets with cedar. Cedar-lined closets and a show of support for our veterans (of which my father is one, with two brothers and a sister also having served in the military)... I'm sold.

Incidentally, I chose the "I support our veterans" logo because of the reason above. I really liked the "Support our Troops" logo, but would have prefered it to read "Protect our Troops" instead.

I chose "Support the Troops" because I do. They give every day--every single day.
Why not show my support by posting an icon telling the world that I'm proud of those who serve? My life is better because of their service and sacrifice.

I chose this icon in memory of my father, who like so many of his generation, served in World War II (in Italy and North Africa). My father is gone now, but one of my most cherished mementos of his is his purple heart. Like my father and so many other veterans, he is gone but not forgotten.

I choose this icon because I have donated to this cause in the past. I believe our veterans should always be remembered, respected, and taken care of by their fellow Americans for the sacrifices they have made for us in service!

There's still time to receive 500 Gather points. We're giving out 500 each day, now through July 31st. And of course, there is always time to continue to support the troops, veterans, and Paralyzed Veterans of America on Gather!
