By Jean F.
Along the canyon rims,
giant, ancient warriors sleep...
Guardians of sacred truths,
locked inside stony walls...Scores of eons ebbed and gone
since first they took their rest...
Weathered faces uplifted,
knowing eyes that ever gaze
toward sun, rain and clouds...Their skins of coppery earth,
like the land that begat them...
The nobility of the hawk,
carved upon their craggy visages,
waiting for the end of time...

SW Colorado near Cortez is a mountain named the Sleeping Ute from legend of a giant Ute indian warrior felled in battle ..now sleeping and caring for the land and the people..
beautiful poem ..and you guys do nice work!
I actually wrote this poem after Hubby and I had passed through AZ and NM as we were goning across country on his Harley... When I saw Toni's photos and they looked exactly like the mountains that had inspired the poem, I knew I had to find it and publish it here on Gather. I asked her if we could do a collaboration and she was gracious enough to say "yes" and... well... here we are! :o)
