Juan, I agree with you... I think some of the disrespect towards our military, is a reflection on how many of these people were not raised correctly... SOme people not only make fun of military, they make fun of the disabled, those who do not have as much intelligence as another, they make fun and put labels on people... Listen, to some on here,,, they actually think they are superior to others.... These people were not raised , they were grabbed by the hair and pulled up... They had some poor excuses for parents... If this is not the case and they were taught respect, then they need to show it.... Some people carry free speech to far.... I could not disrespect these very people who have fought through the generations to give us this freedom of speech..

If a person joins the military today thinking war is a solution to terrorism I would disagree with them.

What? Not supporting Bush's wars (and so our current feelings about the military) has nothing to do with the disabled.

Peter, I would agree with you up to a point. To believe, that any military intervention and actions, have not curtailed any in some instances prevent further terrorist attacks and violence is naïve.

That said, I also have to say, that those attacking our military, as in the instance of the idiot who calls all Marines scum and murders, remind me of those scum Muslim extremists, that took down the Towers or those that video tape themselves beheading Americans. In my mind they are the same.

Peter, I don't support Bush's war or his administration, yet I do not find it necessary to insult all the men and women who have ever worn the uniform, by spitting on the grave of a fallen Marine. Nor do I find it necessary to paint all the men and woman in the Arm Forces as war mongers, rapists or other evil names.

I invite the individual that initiated this article and all of his cronies and supporters, to join us in a little free speech.

Spreading offensive, insulting material on the internet is an act of cowardice.

The members of our military are sons, daughters, the kid down the block. They are our friends and neighbors, we need to respect and admire the fine job they do.

The right of free expression is guaranteed to citizens by the government. That does not mean that a Citizen is required to listen to, or even allow, any speech he objects to within his space and jurisdiction.

For example, use of racial epithets in my home will result in ejection from my home. That is an absolute denial of free speech rights. Use of obscene language on my property within earshot of a child will result in ejection from my property, or an instant and sincere apology to the child. Some forms of speech are certainly CENSORED in my home.

Next issue.

Now, regarding "Fighting Words" as in insults to Veterans. I don't know the law everywhere, but words and phrases intended to goad an individual to violent response are illegal, and Constitutionally illegal in many states. It is quite difficult to define "fighting words." The intent of the words is what makes the difference. It is by the way illegal in almost ALL states to challenge a person to a duel to the death. Another example of prior restraint on speech.

It's hard to deal with insurgents with war. I think that kind of thing needs an ongoing, low key, discrete "police action". But that's not as politically exciting and brash as war. But I think war in this case just makes things worse. It has radicalized Iraq where it wasn't before. It has radicalized Islam in the whole region. We are so unwanted. That's the last thing we want.

Seeing army people certainly remind me of all that. I won't spit but I might cringe.

I hat this administration and I hate this war, but I respect soldiers and their personal sacrifices. It bothers me that this sacrifice is treated so cavalierly by some people on Gather and by the Bush administration.

I believe those that disrespect our Military also have a deep rooted hatred of the United States. They are the first to blame America for all the worlds problems.
Those people fail to realize, or admit, that we as Americans, and the United States as a whole, have done more to ease the suffering, and give comfort and aid to most of the world. We as a country have been a beacon of hope for those who suffer under tyranny, those that suffer from hunger & disease.
I am not saying that we have not made mistakes, we have, but I don't think those USA haters would have the freedom to voice their hate and anger if they lived in, say Iran.

Dan, a coward is one who, in complete safety, attacks others. The playground bully who physically attacks those weaker than himself. The playground bully who socially attacks those in a less popular position than herself. The annonymity of the internet has allowed bullies to insult and demean others without fear of detection. Men who insult their wives in public. The rich demeaning the poor for not being well off. The academically proficient who belittle the "red-neck" for his lack of education. These are all acts of cowardice.

Speaking one's mind to another, no matter their title or power *can* be a sign of great strength and true nobility. But that is never done by one who hides his identity.

Oh - so now we have to have war against Iran, too. I see that some military worshipers here want to keep war growing into a total East VS West Super World War 3.

Yikes.

Our troops have effectively wiped out the Al Quida. They have done a great job in our latest war.

Vietnam was not our proudest moment, but no one can blame McCain or any of the soldiers for the mistakes of the Democrats - Kennedy and Johnson.

Iran is becoming very worrisome; Be grateful for those willing to fight for us.

You can insult someone, but dont be surprised if they person insulted takes them as fighting words.

I think people are entitiled to think whatever they please, but it is wrong to insult those people who are part of the system who fought for your very right to do so. The soldiers are committed to us as a country and are doing their duty. I am sure that among the many enlisted men, not all of them agree with the current policies and the war itself, but they are loyal to their country and must do what they are called upon to do I think we owe them our respect and support no matter what our political beliefs.

I have been exchanging comments with one idiot who whatever reason, has a huge amount of hate and animosity towards anyone in a uniform. He refuses to admit that the Marines and those like them did not start this war in Iraq. He and his buddies refuse to acknowledge it is only through the sacrafices that anyone in uniform has made that we are still a free nation.

No peter we do NOT have to have a war with Iran. We can simply close our eyes to all that is going on,, and let them wipe us off the map if that is what you wish.

And no, I don't worship the Military, but I AM damn proud of them, and I realize that we would not be able to converse like this if it were not for our Fine Men & Women in the armed forces. God Bless them all!

Great job John. I am glad someone can still fight for that marine who fought for us and lost his life. He paid the ultimate price and we should honor him. His family also paid a huge price for our liberties. The marine paid with his life so that COWARD could do what he did. Let's see him try to do that to a soldier who can see him and fight back. I for one would love for him to try this. Film himself confronting a soldier who will punch his lights out. Love to see that and would show it to all that I could. Of course he won't do that. He will only dishonor this soldier and his grave. I also think that this guy's parents should feel ashamed of what they raised. Unless they are the same as him, then I can understand and have a little pity for the poor guy. Not knowing right from wrong is a bad way to live. In any way that right was given to him by soldiers like the one whose grave he desecrated. Long live all the soldiers and their families for all they endure for our freedom!
