Well, friends, Hubby and I headed off for downtown (such as it is) Cloverdale this evening (me with camera in hand) to watch the annual Lion's Club free fireworks show at the Cloverdale High Athletic Field...
Cloverdale, here in Northern California is a very small town (I think the sign on the edge of town says 8,000 people) so it wasn't really super crowded...
This was my first attempt at photographing fireworks with my Canon SX100si camera and I was amazed at how well most of the photos came out so I thought I'd share some of them with you all!
The first thing I noticed was the cool looking crescent moon just above the southwestern horizon:
It wasn't quite dark yet so all of the families were letting off their "safe and sane" fireworks for the kids...
I really like the way this next shot turned out...
This next shot I took on the setting that SUPPOSED to be for "fireworks"... I thought the exposure time was too long -- even though it was kind of cool they way it came out... I decided, though, NOT to use that setting for the overhead fireworks later...
Well... Enough of the "small stuff"... Darkness fell and it was time for the REAL THING!
There were a lot of these -- with a "cross" or "X" in the middle...
Then they started setting off 2 or 3 at a time and you could tell it was building up to the "big finale"!
Soon the sky was ablaze with light and color...
Until the last burst faded from the sky...
And, then, it was over...
('Til NEXT year... ;o) )
HAPPY INDEPENCE DAY to ALL my GATHER friends!!!
luv,
jean

Pretty good display for a small town.
Nice crescent moon.
Spectatcular pics - I really liked the ones on the ground with the people as well including that golden shot - it is really cool.
For some reason I have always liked it when the sky is filled with all the sprinkles like in your last pic - looks magic somehow
Love the crescent moon shot and like Rose, the sparkly one.
Kids with sparklers make me nervous. I had a friend whose sister was badly burned as a child when her clothing was ignited from a sparkler. I'm always hyper-vigilant IF the kids have sparklers.
You know, TB, I was thinking that very thing -- that people who didn't (or couldn't) get out last night and seem them, would like to see the photos... I was thinking about last year when I couldn't get out to see them and remember wishing people here on Gather had published more photos of the fireworks for me to see! Thanks!
I too, have never quite figured out why the heck they have that fireworks setting on cameras. It hasn't done anything for my attempts at these sorts of photos.
Thanks for taking a look at it Shirley!
My only explanation for this is that, perhaps, it is the large, family vineyard owners who donate or bequeath large amounts of money to civic projects... Right now, during a time when most cities in CA don't even have enough money to keep their fire depts., police depts., schools, etc. in even minimal working order, Cloverdale has just approved plans to build about a $2 million addition to the historical society (for temp controlled archives and even conference rooms!) AND a new police dept. building!
