Today, I took some time off from the office and headed off to my mother's. I had promised her I would help her plant the new avocado trees that she had gotten. During the planting my mother started to point out this tree and that plant and went into the story behind each one. It seems that I was totally unaware of the reasons she takes care of them so well. It seems I was totally unaware behind the love and memories they hold for her.
I am not much for flowers and plants or for trees, but my mother has always had a green thumb and her backyard and all that it holds is a treasure that can never be replaced.
As, I helped with digging the holes , where the avocado trees would go, my mother started pointing out different trees and plants and proceeded to give me a little history in how they came to be in our yard.
First, there were the banana trees, which were given to my dad, by a little old lady who loved him like a son. Then there was the orange tree which my dad planted when my brother was born. Let's not forget the tree that looks like a bush, which my late uncle, my mother's older brother, brought with him on one of his many trips, as a truck driver.
My mother went on for some time, and after a while, I started asking her about certain plants or trees. I asked about where my dad's miracle tree was from. I asked about this and that rose bush. I asked about the cactus in the corner next to the fence and I was amazed at how she knew exactly when we got it or what the circumstances were of how she got.
We finally finished the planting and it was time for me to get back. I know it won't be the last time I help plant something and I know it won't be the last time I work in the backyard, but I do know that it will be the last time I look at the banana trees the same way.
