When a Democrat Was Still a Patriot

I believe Reagan sunk most of the Iranian Navy, as well. We can still do that, today.

Could, but who would have the balls to do anything like that? We have not given peace a chance yet. Besides don’t we have to wait until they do something with that bomb before we can convict them of a crime?

Wow, I just read Aspin's NYT piece. Thank you for posting that link, jJack. So many of the things he said still apply today. It's truly a shame that no Democrat would say such things today, much less write them in the NY Times. Believe it or not, Aspen's position was considered "passive" at the time, if I remember right. Apparently, the pendulum has swung in the direction of pacifism in the Donkey party, perhaps as a reaction to Bush's "illegal war" in Iraq, which is a political fiction. As Aspin said, "The key point to communicate is that we are running out of cheeks to turn every time Iran hits us."

Iran is planning a civil war in Lebanon, right now. The stuff is going to hit the fan, as soon as Israel attacks Iran's nuclear sites. I suspect that Al Sadr's Mahdi army will stage a renewed , and perhaps larger offensive in Iraq at the same time. Iran could also start things by trying to shut down the Gulf again, but that's a pretty hollow threat (though the oil speculators say differently).

This may, or may not happen before the election. No one is privy to all of the pieces of the puzzle, but any thinking person knows that more war is on the horizon. Iran can not be allowed to posess a nuclear weapon. Just look at Pakistan, for a lesson learned. We will need the Dems to be "on board," when the stuff hits the fan.

I know you see that potential in Obama, and I hope you're right, if he's elected.

What's more amazing is that people old enough to remember those warnings don't pay heed. Obama is one year older than me, and Iran/Hezbollah blew up our Marine barracks in Lebanon when I was 21 years old, serving in the USMC. Aspin's warning came 4 years later, when even Democrats wanted Reagan to take action against the mullahs. Frankly, I'm surprised the NY Times republished this article.

And for the record, both the Taliban and Saddam are out of power, so we did win the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We are working on stabilizing the successor governments to both of those totalitarian dictatorships.
