Normally candidates win in the primaries by appealing to the party base and then move toward the center in the general election.
This year, the Democratic Party followed the script. Barack Obama ran to the left of Hillary Clinton to clench the nomination and is now shifting his positions more toward mainstream America.
The Republicans somehow got it backwards. John McCain became the leading candidate is spite of the Republican base and now, nomination in had, he is moving to the right.
My guess is this will be counter productive. He will never convince the right wing that he is one of them and they may well stay home on November 4th. Meanwhile he is alienating the independents that might have voted for him.

My addition to your post is that the hard left while stay by Obama no matter what while the Repub base will either stay home in some numbers or venture to some 3d party...
I think you've got it right.
...his name is not Barrack Obama.
I also suspect many of those whose supported Obama , particularly the women, will end up wishing they had supported Hillary rather than Obama.
There are many fronts to attack Obama on, such as the Columbia free-trade pact. The issue is this: Columbia will not get much of increase in exports to us, but allows us to export much more to them. Why does Obama not support this? Because of union opposition, among other special interests. Columbia is also a partner in the war on terrorism, against the Chavez-supported FARC. I suspect that was one of the reasons that McCain just visited Columbia this week.
My review of McCain's record doesn't show a dramatic change in 2004.
See McCain is not Bush
I saw a video of McCain actually admit he knew nothing about the economy and then LIE and say he said no such thing. Had Hillary done something like that, the whole world would know it.
I still respect the man but America is too important to me, my vote goes to Obama.
