Seers, Foresight and Coincidence

for Donald Hawley - 7/1/2008

soothsayers, seers and saints

have a corner on the future,

perhaps scientists do not,

stuff happens, no longer a dream.

mankind's karma or pure accident?

palm reading to some, to others

science fiction or merely imagination?

the stuff of dreams can be very real.

yin and yang together, our reality,

coincidences there may be,

science or astrology --

fiction, guesswork or totality.

universal truths escape us,

the deity, the future, man's place

in the universe, the natural order

of things we may never foresee.

Very well done. I am not much of a poet although I used to do it when I was young. I just wrote as I thought I should and couldn't figure out the mechanics as "real poets" consider it.

Humans have long sought for 'meaning' in existence and failed precisely, I believe, because the focus has always been on mapping a verifiable path to some distant point on an imagined horizon. All of our scientific undertakings have been seduced by the pursuit of the 'known'

Your poem directs us to look closer at what's in plain sight. I think we should all engage life instead of spending our most valuable resource 'life' investigating the very thing we are -'life'

I love it! I love the flow .. I like the way the words roll off my tongue. I will read over and over to get the feel of it. This is what truly touched me:

"yin and yang together, our reality,

fiction, guesswork or totality."

To me, this is the stuff of life.... I love it.

The grasp for reality is a fascination in and of itself. Lace it lightly with imagination and perception for a puree of cognitive dissonance. Your work reignited the realization of the plethora of possible permutations for what we think we know, as truths. I like poetic works that create a desire within me to further explore the possible roots of any given topic. That scramble, the gray matter and beg for a return to some temporary base order.
