My baby had an MRI today

My baby (ok he is 2) had an MRI today.  To accomplish this they had to use general anesthesia to sedate him.  We arrived at the hospital early this morning to prep him. We met with the anesthesiologist who explained to us that the test itself would last about 45 minutes.  They typically use gas to put children to sleep and give an IV to keep him asleep.  Luckily for Owen he didn't know what was about to happen.  They let us go back with him until the gas took effect then we had to leave him until they took him to the recovery room.  He was gone for about an hour.  It was the LONGEST hour I've ever experienced.  Someone came to get us in the waiting room when it was all over and the nurse said he did good.  Before we got to the recovery room we could hear him crying down the hall.  He was crying for us because he was scared.  I was able to calm him down in a few minutes and aside from him being a little sleepy he was fully recovered.

As I write this it seems like it was no big deal, but at the time I was beside myself!  We should have results by tomorrow!

hope everything turns out okay. i went through that with my daughter when she was little. now she is 20 and happy and healthy!

Hey even blood work is a big deal when you are a mom, you hate feeling helpless! You want to make everything all better and you can't!

I have a son that has 3 heart surgeries and more smaller procedures than I can remember. It is harder on the Moms sometimes. When I left my son at pre-school the first day, many Mom were in tears and in a panic at the idea of leaving their 3-year-old behind at the school for 2 1/2 hours. One woman asked me why I was so calm and I said, after you have handed your baby off to the OR for open heart surgery, leaving him at pre-school is easy. Hope you son is fine!

I remember how awful I felt when they took Tamara away for tests when she was little.... could hear her crying too... and not go to her... that was the WORST! I'm glad yours is over with and hope it doesn't show anything its not supposed to :)

Ohhhhhh my buddy Owen! Grems the younger had a MRI and he had anesthesia as well. I got to be in the room with him tho. I am glad he is doing okay. Keep me posted.

They didn't let you stay with him?! I have two children that have had a total of 3 MRI's combined and they never made me leave their side. They had me take all the metal I had off and out of my pockets including my watch, cell phone, and credit cards (which will be erased in the room) and they gave me earplugs. It was super loud like a construction site in the room.... bang bang bang repeatedly. I sat in a chair a little ways from the machine, but I could sit there and watch or read a magazine.

I wonder why they wouldn't let you in there?

Slow or no results are usually good, it is when they react quickly that I know itis not good news

good luck on the results.
My son who is now 21 had several of these in his lifetime. He has Epilepsy since 4 months old. Its really scarey but after a few times it was a piece of cake to him. I remember one time I had to get a cat scan. He said "mommy its ok just do as I do" I said "what is that?" he said "I pretend I am dead" I was freaked out at the time he said that but I have to say after thinking about it I realized I had one brave little boy. Your son is in my prayers please keep us updated.

What a scary experience. I hope the results come back okay. My thoughts are with you and your family.

When my first son was about eight months old he started having siezures. The doctors ran a bunch of painful, inconclusive tests on him and had to strap him in what looked like a straight jacket to keep him from moving in the MRI machine. He screamed the whole time and it broke my wife and my heart to watch and hear this then have to leave the room.

They never mentioned sedating him to us. Thankfully his seizures stopped about six months later and now he's 9.
