I met Schoemperlen a couple of years ago at the Leacock Festival and very much enjoyed both her reading, and the opportunity I had to just sit and chat with her. Her previous novels & short story collections include:
- Names of the Dead: An Elegy to Victims of September 11 (2004)
- Red Plaid Shirt: Stories New and Collected (2003)
- Our Lady of the Lost and Found (2001)
- Forms of Devotion (1998), which won the Governor General's Award
- In the Language of Love (1994)
- Hockey Night in Canada (1987)
- Frogs and other Stories (1986)
A detailed review of the book, by Carla Lucchetta , writing for the Ottawa Citizen says:
What starts with "I am a writer who cannot write," and ends with "It would appear that I am no longer at a loss for words," includes a whole lot of fun and frolic with words, no matter how sad the tale within. Therein lies the mark of Diane Schoemperlen, a critically praised, consistently fine, lively writer. Somehow her name doesn't come up often in discussions of Canadian greats. It should.
I am so looking forward to reading At a Loss For Words - and to seeing Schoemperlen again at this year's Leacock Festival in Orillia, Ontario. She will be appearing on Sunday, July 27 @ 3 p.m., along with David Gilmour and Jane Urquhart.
