Slightly Puzzled About Horrible Image Rating (Tongue in Cheek)

I'm fairly new here, as far as actually participating, anyways. I noticed last week that someone had rated the picture of myself that I use as my icon a 10! I told my husband how sweet that someone would do that.  Then this afternoon I had a total of 3 people rate it 10. Now I'm thinking that Gather sure has some nice people as members! Well...........my next rating was a 2! LOL!! A 2!!!! I guess just one "You're ugly" out of four isn't too bad!!   *grin*

The people that give you low scores like that here are called "Drive-By Raters" or DBRs (I think that's the term). They get their kicks giving anyone and everyone a really low score - usually a "1". They do it because they can, like hackers. I stopped allowing ratings because of that. I know my Gather friends like my stuff and we all like one another, so I'm not going to bother myself with ratings. Peace of mind!

I rarely give anything lower than a 9 so you know it wasn't me! I give 10's mostly and sometimes 9's if I think that the story isn't for me, or the question is stupid, or something like that. Most pictures get a 10 just for effort!

It has nothing to do with your looks, it has to do with this:

LOW RATERS ARE LOW RENT!

They just do it to see if they can upset people. So I welcome them to come in and low rate anything of mine. It is sooo cool cause it gives me more points. Other than that, who cares?

I was getting really frustrated by the trolls and then I decided to change my ways and just welcome them... Every time I open up the Cafe they come round and down rate it... so I curtained off a booth in the corner by the bar and reserved it just for trolls.... I thought maybe if they had there own little place to congregate in hiding... maybe they would be happier.... How miserable they must be as people to find being mean a part of their lives....

I've heard a lot here about DB1's (people who come and rate a 1 and don't comment).... I know they do it just to be nasty. There are some that just come in and rate a 10 and leave no comment. I don't like that either because I want to be able to go back and match as many comments as were made to me and if they don't leave a comment I don't even know they were there!!!

As far as the DB1's it's too bad they don't have the nerve to at least say WHY they felt it necessary to give a bad rating. I always rate a 10 and have never saw anything not worthy of a good rate. Now if it was an article with something totally against my beliefs, ideas or thoughts.... well I just move on.... no rate and no comment. Why be nasty? I guess it's just in my nature not to be mean for no reason, lol.

And another thing to think about is a rating and a page view are still points in your pocket! Regardless, you still benefit from their antics. For me it's the principle.... it just bugs me, lol.

There are some people that are mean with their ratings. And, there are others who accidentally hit nine instead of ten. My typing is atrocious sometimes. And, my finger truly does slip. But a two? Huh? What is that about?

I'm sorry that happened to you. It's happened to me on various things that I post. At some point, everyone gets hit by a little stinky troll. Though I do have to say that it can be hard to tell who did it, even going by the email the comments came in. Some people who comment, don't leave a rating at all so if someone comes along and leaves a rating and comment, and it matches up, it may not really be them that did it because someone else may have just rated it low and not left a comment so it ends up looking like that matches. But it could really be that person to, it's just hard to know for sure. Ok, that sounded less confusing in my head but it happens lol. I did go by your picture earlier and left you a 10. It's a nice icon picture.
I have no idea why you image was rated so low. I just looked at it. I see nothing wrong with it. I did give you a ten to help up your rating.

Some people are just mean and give low ratings. You get points if they rate low, so don't let the low raters bother you. But It seems to happen more later at night or real early in the morning when not many members are on.
RJ, Don't let it bother you. To tell the truth, I've never so much as looked at a single rating as long as I've been on Gather. Some people are just mean, "small" people (and I'm not referring to physical stature, which is irrelevant), and if you start judging yourself by the cheap shots thrown at you by such mentally and spiritually challenged embarrassments to the human race, you will keep your own spirit from soaring to the heights for which it is intended. I always give 10 stars to anything on which I comment, but really am not concerned by the ratings on my own posts.

I was hit by the troll recently too. I am thinking of not allowing ratings more often...but, even when the drop by to be mean, they are giving you points...so that is a plus.

Hope you continue to enjoy Gather - it really is a great place despite those few individuals.

we have a few immature people here I get hit often cause I speak my mind and dare to relate to those they find untouchable . To heck with them !!

If it does bother you turn off your ratings if not let the babies have there toy

Some people just aren't happy unless they are or think they are giving others pain. I just ignore it, there will always be an ass in a group who doesn't have the balls to say what they mean, jut leave low points.

RJ, some of us think we are supposed to rate the work. It is possible that the 2 was for the photograph and not because something thinks you are ugly. I hope, anyway.

I never pay any attention to my ratings. Lately I haven't even had time to post anything, do try to comment and rate a bit every day. Or at least get through most of my emails. So many things I want to do, so little time to do them.

Yes, I've had visits from the trolls. I figured out long ago the trolls are those who want their articles and images to stay at the top and have no problem sabotaging others to do it. I also suspect that they are also the same people who expect you to post to every one of their articles and go around whining about how badly life had treated them and how they need you to answer their posts so they can get Gather points and pay their bills.

IMHO this is an old hangover from the days when the only way people really saw your stuff is if it was rated high. Now, a lot of people view Gather differently and respond to friends first and then latest articles.

Ratings have ticked off or insulted a lot of people, throughout numerous forums. Personally, I don't much care for rating systems. Just because one posts an article or a picture, doesn't necessarily mean they want their stuff critiqued as if they were trying to be a "professional". If being a professional is what gather is about, then I'm definitely on the wrong forum.

I do not count the rateings myself as more than that I count the numbers of visits more. if they did take the time to stop by and look then they trought it was worth looking at. Some people will just put something like "Nice Pic" or something else that just means they have been by. Gather is full of great people so do not let one or two rude people put you off.

I just ignore my ratings and don't take them personally since we know the trolls are out there and the numbers don;t mean much anyway. I am like some of the others....I will either give you a 10 or not rate it at all if it is a subject I do not like.

Ratings don't really hold any value, unless you've entered a contest that require them. I don't think we even receive points for leaving a rating, though many think we do. Unless I just happen to forget, I always turn my ratings off when I'm submitting anything. I don't feed the trolls. lol

I remember the first time I got hit. Bent out of shape comes to mind. I do slide videos and one low score really screws up our rating. If this gives them their kicks, then I am so happy for them, but, tomorrow morning I will wake up with a low rate but they have to wake up still being them. They can have it.

What I've learned from being on the internet every day for the last five years is that there are people on every site that just enjoy being mean for the sake of being mean. You know...I have just come to the realization that if I don't want to something to be criticized, like a personal family picture, I just don't allow ratings. I do feel it is a bit lame to down-rate something very low and not say as to why. Que sera~ Everyone has their own opinions and what is beautiful for one is not for another~ I give 10s because I am thankful when someone shares :)

I'm not sure how anyone knows what "most" people do. If this is true, it makes no sense. If you read Gather's statement about points: How do I rate content on Gather?
At the bottom of an article, image, or video, just click one of the stars that corresponds with your rating: 1-10, with 10 representing some of the best content you've seen. You can only rate each article, image, or video once, and you're not able to change or remove your ratings.

There are ten numbers for a reason. Not everything you look at will be "the best" content you've seen. Some will be outstanding (10) and some will be pathetic (1), and most will be somewhere between the two. It's sad to me that adults don't get this concept.

Don't let the trolls get to you. I don't even pay attention to my ratings. I pay attention to the comments because I am here for friends and to share with people. If someone doesn't want to comment on my work and just rate it low, so be it. That's just one less person to worry about. I only want to be friends with people who are nice. Hmm, are you fishing for compliments, just joking or insecure. You look fine, maybe the 2 was because of compositional features, focus, balance, use of color, etc ... or as happened to me one time, my mouse just slipped and I accidentally gave someone a low rating. You are not a 2, and even if anyone was a 2, it would be 1-ish behavior to tell them so, and you can ignore the opinions of someone who behaves 1-ish-ly, right? ;-)

Also remember it could have been a mistake. I clicked quickly one day and gave a good friend who always comments on my pieces a one.

I don't pay no mind to ratings. Ratings don't earn you anything. On the plus side of that low ratings don't loose any earnnings either. Ratings are something for members to play with only. So, try not to let them get to you to bad. I think your icon looks great.

It makes you wonder why gather bothers with ratings 2 through 9. You are either a 10 or a 1 in most cases. If you got a 2, you should frame it! Some troll was going for the 1 and goofed! LOL! For the record, I gave you a 10.
