FROST WARNING TONIGHT

The sweltering afternoons of summer 

have slipped into lingering 

autumn nights and chilly mornings,

the last of the purple phlox 

blooms beside the foot path,

sumac and sugar maple

flame scarlet and gold

along the River Road

and the homeless man

who lived at the park bench 

near Eustis Street

the whole month of August

and part of September

has packed his small sack 

of belongings

and moved on.

I know this feeling. It makes our winters sound so dismal when a homeless man deserts us because winter is coming... such vivid imagery! Wonderful.
