Homosexuals Kissing?? -- American Family Association Should Get Their Heads Out Of Their Gutters

June 25, 2008 11:58 AM EDT (Updated: June 25, 2008 12:01 PM EDT)
views: 529 | rating: 9.5/10 (68 votes) | comments: 143

The American Family Association (AFA) -- a self-proclaimed pro-family organization -- has issued an Action Alert regarding a Heinz company advertisement that supposedly "pushes" gay marriage.

The offending ad currently runs in The U.K. and AFA warns that it can be expected in the U.S. soon.

The Action Alert is posted to the AFA web site with copy of the video and an urging to call or write Heinz in protest.

I'd like to thank the AFA for sharing this video.

I never would have seen it otherwise.

Here is a link for others:

"Heinz ad pushes gay marriage and family, features homosexuals kissing"

At first view, I could kind of see the tones that AFA was talking about, and I wasn't sure how to react.

Then I gave it a second and third view, and a totally different realization came to light.

The ad-writer had played a substitution game on a scenario involving the product and its intended uses.

The commercial message portrays that a middle-class mother who uses the products featured -- New York Deli Style Mustard and Mayonnaise -- on the sandwiches she makes for her family's lunches would be treating her family to sandwiches that taste like they had been made by a real New York Deli worker.

The actor playing "Mum" was dressed in the stereotypical deli worker outfit of white shirt, white apron and white wedge cap. He also had what I would call the standard characteristics of someone from Brooklyn (beefy looking). I think the New York tonal inflections could have been played up a bit more.

This "visual statement" was then contrasted to the context of "the deli guy" playing the role, speaking the dialogue and being interacted with by others as if "he" were the stereo-typical middle-class mother sending her family off with lunches.

I thought it was entertaining. I chuckled several times. It didn't seem "gay" at all.

The AFA's Action Alert claims that homosexuals kissing is "featured" in the ad.

Let me tell you, I watch a science fiction show on the "BBC America" channel which really has featured same-sex kissing. The show "Torchwood" (of which I am a big fan) has a lead character whose sexual orientation is best summed up as "very" and he is clear on the fact that he has no gender preferences or restrictions whatsoever.

The same-sex kissing shown in that show is the kind that lasts for full minutes, is open mouthed, and sometimes shows tongue; which is to say that the kissing is "featured" in the classical fashion which TV and silver screens notoriously use to show great passionate kisses.

In the Heinz ad that AFA is so alarmed about, there is a domestic Doris Day type peck on the lips that lasts less than a second as the "Dad" runs out the door to work. It is hardly gay, and it is hardly a feature.

AFA is off the mark on this one. It seems much more obvious that Heinz was just plying a tongue and cheek substitution maneuver in this advertisement for their deli-style kitchen product.

I think AFA is just seeing what they fear the most: Adam and Steve instead of McMurray and Reed.

Respectfully submitted for your consideration.

You know I can't stand seeing people kissing slobbery kisses and I don't care who they are, and these organizations see evil in cartoons. What does bother me is the current trend of popularity of homosexual relations. Leave your sexual orientation bi, homo, or straight at home.

I would much rather watch two people kiss, than watch two people kill each other !!

I wish the AFA would get a life, geez I guess it's okay for our children to watch all that violence and rotting corpses on TV, but not same sex kissing ??!!
I can remember when it was okay to walk with a girl friend arm and arm and for two same sex people to hug or give a peck on the cheeck and it was NOT considered Gay !!

What the Hell is wrong with people???

Makes me frustrated that an organization uses the name of a country in such a bigoted sense. I suppose that it is mostly fear that they are expressing.

I don't care to see anyone kissing each other in public.. by kissing I mean sucking face.. and I mean anyone any sexual orientation. Leave it behind closed doors. If you are gay straight or in between I don't care to see it. I don't care about it being on TV because I can turn the channel if it offends me. I think we can see worse on a soap opera.. so it doesn't bother me. It bothers me if two people are sucking face in front of me and I will tell them to get a room when it happens.

As far as homosexuality goes, I have gay friends, I have straight friends, no matter who my friends are I am glad when they are happy in their relationships YAY but I do not want them making out in front of my children! LOL ALL PEOPLE should keep their bedroom behaviors in the bedroom in real life. On tv / movies ANYTHING GOES but parents should be more responsible about what they let kids watch, not just with sexual themes but with violent ones as well!

Man, there are so many other things to worry about then a commerical like that. Personally I enjoyed the commercial and also got a laugh out of it. It was cute. If my kids saw it, I wouldn't be in an uproar and boycott the products because I thought they'd end up being gay. Geez. Even if they do grow up gay, I still would not have a problem with it. Everyone deserves to be happy as long as it's not hurting someone else.

I have no problem with gays being featured in commercials, just as heterosexuals have been featured. Would someone (say, Carol) be offended at a commercial with a man and woman walking down a beach at sunset holding hands and gazing into each others' eyes? Probably not - it is quite common to have such a scene in advertising. But, substitute the woman for another man, or the man for another woman and get ready for all hell to break loose.

Gays are consumers, too. Just like any other "defined" group. It was a big deal when they started showing blacks in major tv commercials in the 60's. Grow up, people.

Much ado about nothing.
Dear Carol, I agree with your point about leaving your sexuality at home.
However, just as African -American pride became more pronounced begining in the sixties, so to, I believe, is it to be expected that after hundreds of years of forced closeting of homosexuality, there will be some over active demonstration of Gay and Lesbian pride.
It is understandable seeing how many "Pro Family" orgs. there are still at war with nature.
After all Nature makes people gay unless you are one of those who beleive that Homosexuals are that way by choice?

I responded about this on another site already today. Here's what I said there...

My faith tells me that homosexuality is wrong. But my displeasure goes beyond whether or not it's correct behavior according to the Bible.

You see, we know that the statistics show that somewhere between 2 and 10 percent of people in the US are gay (depending on which study you're using). If that's the case, then I have a problem with kids being taught in school that it's "normal." It's not normal. Perhaps it's normal for those who participate. But it's not normal for most of society. I think that distinction should be made.

I have problems with any commercial being shown during the time when kids could be watching that a parent has to be present for to explain. That could include commercials about being gay, or about products or medications that don't have anything to do with being a child (and much to do with being an adult).

And as for violence and sex on TV? My son never was allowed to watch regular TV by himself until he was about 13.

Our pastor had a rule in his family that any PG13 or R rated movies had to be viewed in the living room with at least one (preferably two) parent watching...so that they could discuss why the movie was rated that way and why the behaviors were not what Christians should mimic.

Hey, that was a much better commercial than any of the Viagra/Cialas commercials I am stuck with. I can't believe those guys can't just go to the Dr, but no, I have to watch the stupid ads, every night of my life, if I want to catch the news. At least these two guys are promoting the kitchen rather than the bedroom. I'm with Carol, leave the bedroom at home, or at your Dr's office no matter what your preference is.

I could care less if someone is gay or straight..The slobbering and intimate kissing needs to stay in the bedroom. Leave out of commericals and such that kids will see. People wonder why kids are getting more and more younger when it comes to getting sexually active...it is shove in their faces being posted all the tv, billboards and net.

It is a well known fact that homophobic people are usually struggling to resist their own homosexual tendencies, and this is why they are so adamant and fearful in their opposition to gays. You don't see people who are well-adjusted and comfortable in their sexuality getting up in arms over the sexual preference of others. Basically their reaction tends to be "whatever".

This is why so many publicly anti-gay evangelical "Christians" have been caught in some "pants-down" kind of moment with a gay prostitute or something like that. They are suppressing and hiding their nature so forcefully that when it comes out (forcing its way like steam pressure building in a sealed container) it comes out in the most degrading and dangerous kinds of sleazy sex -- rather than something more ordinary and domestic like gay marraige.

I have never understood where these people come up with their conviction that gay rights, gay marriage and gay expressions of affection in public will, in some undefined way, threaten them and their heterosexual unions. In fact, the only way this conclusion makes sense is if it is predacated on the existence of a suppressed homosexual desire in the first place. All these anti-gay fundamentalists are worried that exposure the gays and their romantic behaviour will elicit a lustful response in themselves, and in others by extension, because they feel all these homosexual urges they are suppressing and think that everyone else must also feel them or else it is just that they are actually gay. But that could never be, so it must be that we are all suppressing homosexual tendencies all the time, right?

Live and let live. Just think, all those gay guys are guys that will never hit on your wife. So actually they help reduce the competition and make your marriage more secure, not less. Unless, that is, you are worried that your own sexual performance is so lacking that you will turn your wife off of heterosexual sex entirely and send her running into the arms of a lesbian lover!

Admit it, though, if that happened you wouldn't be entirely upset so long as they let you watch.

I haven't seen the ad or watched the video in the link. The AFA has its right to protest but, if what you say is true, it won't be paid much attention. As you said, it's probably more humorous than offensive. I wonder what the AFA thought of Milton Berle?

Maybe the AFA is a little perturbed (as I am) about the fact that the Heinz fortune, which was controlled by a conservative, republican family from Pittsburgh until some liberal democrat from Massachussetts married Senator John Heinz's widow. The courting started weeks after Senator John Heinz's death. Rumors (unsubstantiated as far as I know) have circulated that the courting actually started before the tragic accident.

Rory: I'm sorry but your "well known fact" is pure gay propaganda supported by gay leaning so called researchers. We are being inundated by "gay" interests, some masquerading as "interested parties." To attempt to indoctrinate the American public to accept the "gay" lifestyle is appalling. You cannot watch a TV program without finding the "gay" message filling the screen in at least one point in the program. We used to complain about propaganda in the Soviet Union and now we have "become them." Only our propaganda machine is the self appointed elite celebrity "intellectuals" who can't seem to count to twenty without taking off their shoes.

How is this different from the response to including blacks, especially men, on tv and in commercials in the '60's? Many people were afraid that this would encouraget their white daughters to date/marry black men? I don't understand the representation of a portion of society in advertisements equalling "propaganda". And, I think, Donald, that you discredit yourself with the "intellectual elitist" statement. Look up the definition of elitist - since when did being knowledgable and expert at something equate to "bad" in people's views?

Mark-John K.: My wife and I, both heterosexuals obviously, have always had gay friend, both male and female. Our two children, a son and a daughter, grew up with these people being a part of their community. Neither of them have shown any indication of confusion as to their sexuality: my son dates women and my daughter dates men. Just what confusion are you talking about? I think that an innocent young person could be confused as to their sexual identity if someone were to abuse them, touch them, involved them in sexual activity -- which would be inappropriate no matter what gender or preference was involved. Children should not be part of adult sexuality. But seeing two adults expressing affection (and beyond that is for private encounters, again regardless of gender or preference) is not going to "confuse" a child as to their sexual identity. I know gay parents whose children have grown up to be heterosexual without any apparent confusion.

Dan (open minded conservative) K.: No, I am not a doctor, nor did I claim to be. Nor did anyone else on this thread offer credentials along with their opinion, that I can see. So what is your point? If you wish to dispute my ideas of philosophy, please feel free to do so. If your best approach is to offer disparagingly sarcastic comments questioning my right to have those ideas --- keep it to yourself. It is poor debating technique at best.

Donald: You know how much respect I have for your opinion and we share our core beliefs very closely. I do not think that homosexuality is a particularly healthy thing for anyone, but just as I do not expect anyone else to submit to my religious beliefs neither do I expect anyone to share my perspective on homosexuality. In other words, I do not expect homosexuals to submit to the point of view that their lifestyle is unhealthy or bad for them. So long as only consenting adults are involved, it's not my business to judge them. I would like to ask what you mean by "gay propaganda"? Do you believe that homosexuals in society have some agenda to convert people to their lifestyle? Do you think that they, as a group, have anything but acceptance and equal rights in mind? Can you think of any reason why they should not have equal rights, given that they have committed no crime, that there is no victim involved in adult consensual sexual activity?

As to the question of what's normal, I would like to broaden the discussion a litle.

The definition of normal tends to change from era to era, even from generation to generation. Normal goes in and out of fashion. Defining normal is not easy. If you want to define normal, when it comes to sexuality, as being only those activities for which the body parts were designed, as I suspect many homophobic heterosexuals do want, then this means male-female copulation only.

This means the following activities are also abnormal for heterosexuals as well as homosexuals: anal sex; oral sex; masturbation; sexual activity of any kind other than penis-in-vagina intercourse. If all of you heterosexuals opposed to homosexuality on the basis of it being abnormal are also willing to give up your extra-normal sexual activities then, fine. Otherwise you have to accept that what others choose to do in addition to simply procreative sex is their definition of normal and you have no right to stand in judgement of it.

OMG! Whatever happened to words like "sense of humor" and "common sense"? This spot is very funny and the intent is obvious. If the AFA and groups like it are protecting our morals, who is protecting us from the AFA?

Thanks for the heads-up, Bill. Unfortunately, the ad has been removed from YouTube, and apparently from UK televisions as well, so I can't watch it and judge it for myself. But based on the descriptions here, it sounds like the AFA has once again deliberately and completely misrepresented the nature of the ad to try to whip their members into a frenzy. And apparently, it worked.

Screw the AFA. I'll buy whatever damned condiments I want, and I'm not the least bit worried that my choice of mustard, mayo, or ketchup is going to make me (or my children) catch the gay.

I wonder how many members of the AFA make a regular habit of accosting and chastising gay couples who dare to show affection (holding hands, kissing, saying "I love you") in public? I'm sure they desperately want to, but I'm guessing that they don't because they're too gutless.

Rory, I think you're right about those repressed sexual desires. And it looks like you hit a nerve or two.

Sandy and Sheryl -- me three.

Donald - I didn't read all of your comment for a couple of reasons. I saw the phrase not normal - excuse me, by whose definition of normal? You? Well thank Goddess I'm queer.

Also 2% to !0% you poor misinformed person. There's a lot more than 10% but there are so many people afraid to let anyone know because of bigots like you, they don't get counted.

In addition, please define the gay agenda. No one told me about the meeting and I know everything that goes on in Cleveland. If I don't one of my kids or friends would. Nope, no agenda, just want to live our lives no more and no less than anyone else.

Marilyn - Your arguments fall on flat ears. I don't believe in the bible and what I do believe is none of you business and I'm truly sick and tired of you and your cohorts and the fake Christian agenda. If you're really Christian quit talking about it and do good works like Christ did. You are not a prophet and definitely have nothing to teach that anybody besides you and your haters want to hear.

Rory, et al: I realize that my views are considered "radical" by those who will respond to this article with comments. But I have to be honest with myself. I never go along "with the trend" just because my "peers" think I should. I think that homosexuality is abnormal by any definition (in fact, by the strict definition of what most people do or think). I think that our society has become far too permissive and that it is showing in the growing crime rate, the decline of morals and ethics and in the general deterioration of our culture. I particularly object to the massive rationalization that is going on with all this nonsense about how science is showing that this or that is just a matter of difference in genes. Everyday we are inundated with "scientific" proof that such and such is normal or whatever, only to have "science" prove otherwise. "Science" is the key word today to justify whatever it is that you wish to get others to tolerate and accept. I don't mind being classified a bigot on this issue. It is my considered opinion from long experience exposed to it and I refuse to allow my moral and ethical values be dictated by the "politically correct" police in Hollywood. Sorry, but that's how it is with me.

Thank you all for your comments.

I'm glad I could stir-up such great conversation.

I don't know why the links don't work for some; they are still working for me.

Anyway, here's another link to the AFA web site page: "Heinz ad pushes gay marriage and family, features homosexuals kissing"

and if that one doesn't work, here's another:

"Heinz ad pushes gay marriage and family, features homosexuals kissing"

The difference between the two is that one should open in a new window, and the other should change this page.

For those who might wish to show some support or consideration to the Heinz company regarding this flap, I invite you to send a letter, e-mail or phone call of support to them. Just let them know if you liked the ad, and-or didn't think it was gay, and-or found it funny, and-or whatever.

A contact person at H. J. Heinz for this incident was published as:

Michael Mullen -- 412.456.5751 -- Michael.mullen@us.hjheinz.com

As Tabitha M. pointed out, Heinz has already pulled the ad from broadcasting. They have also issued an apology.

According to TheLondonPaper.com, Heinz UK pulled the ad after receiving more than 200 complaints.

A spokesman for the company was quoted as saying:

"The advertisement, part of a short-run campaign, was intended to be humorous, and we apologize to anyone who felt offended."

I guess they proved that they are very sensitive to consumer responses. I had no idea that a mere 200 complaints could be so effective.

Which makes me ponder... whose company ads don't I like...?

My thanks to Tabitha for keeping us up on the latest breaking news. It would seem that "The Heinz Incident" is already fading into history's fog.

I don't think they should have pulled the add. That's another way of censorship. I am sorry that I didn't get a chance to see it before everyone overreacted. This is getting ridiculous. If you can't love the one you're with then what did the founding fathers fight a war for the right to have our constitution today?
I know the add was in England but, still...
We have to take a stand before they take away all our rights.
Before they say we can't be on the internet anymore because it offends someone.

Doc ..... loved your response ..... I, too, sent their letter.

subject: I LOVE your UK Heinz Ad for NY Deli Condiments

content:

Dear Chairman Johnson:

The American Family Association wants me to state, "I find your promotion of homosexual marriage and family unacceptable."

This couldn't be further from the truth. I believe that they are going off of the deep end and only seeing what they WANT to see ... if you look hard enough, you will be able to make boogey-men out of shadows ...

Your ad was actually amusing, with the mother being portrayed as a NY deli person making authentic tasting sandwiches for her family.

I think if the people from the AFA took their collective heads out of their anal cavities long enough to actually "see" the intent of this commercial, the majority might also find it humorous.

Don't knuckle under to these types of pressure groups. They do NOT speak for ME or anyone else that I know. Have a great evening and an even better day.

I didn't know that anyone else had done the same thing ..... lol .... guess great minds think alike ....

I've seen the commercial, which has been withdrawn by Heinz, and I disliked it. It was more of a gay satire piece than a product promotion.

Not everyone who dislikes this commercial or who disapproves of same sex marriage is homophobic or prejudiced.

Went to check it out and the video has been yanked.

I'm also a Torchwood fan. That's why we pay for cable, so we can watch adult programs without the AFA's nose in it. (BTW- Describing Jack Harkness' sexual orientation as "very" sums him up nicely. LOL His "little black book" is the phone directory.)

For the record, seeing man kisses on Torchwood has not destroyed my heterosexual relationship.

I tried to view the commercial and it was no longer available. Oh well. After reading the script, so to speak, I think these people must be nuts. It had nothing to do with sexual orientation. Geez!

I must say that it isn't so unusual to see races in commercials that used to be reserved for whites only. Now we see normal Americans, of different heritages in commercials. They are married, live in regular houses, buy regula stuff and they are of Asian, African, Indian or Native American heritage. Big deal? Well, it was when it was first started.

I don't mind see a gay couple buying furniture, talking about their mayo or bleaching their child's sport uniform. Big deal? Evidently it is now, but wait a bit and it will be fine.

How about blended families, divorced couples? How about single moms or single dads. Why can't advertisers direct their ads at these people too? Arent' there a lot of them out there?

The American Family Association should just get a grip on things.
