Earlier this month, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry vetoed a measure co-sponsored by state Rep. Sally "Gays are Worse than Terrorism" Kern. Thanks to everyone who wrote emails and letters, made phone calls, and spoke out about how horribly stupid and ignorant this bill was. At least Henry had enough sense to shut it down, but it never should have gotten as far as it did.
So what exactly was it? The Religious Viewpoints Antidiscrimination Act would have allowed school students may express their religious beliefs in homework, artwork, and other assignments without penalty. Sounds good, right? I mean, this nation was founded on ideals of freedom of – and from – religion, and we can't go discriminating someone for their religious beliefs. Except that was this measure would have allowed is, for example, little Johnny writes "5" as an answer to "What is 2+2?" on his math test. Johnny claims it's his religious belief that 2+2 is indeed 5; it has been taught to him by his priest, read about in his holy book, and other religious convictions tell him it is so. The teacher – by law – can't mark Johnny's answer wrong, because it would be "religious discrimination".
Of course, no religious I know of claims this 2+2=5 jazz, but plenty of religious beliefs involving other known facts would be met with open arms – the age of the earth and the theory of common ancestry are a couple. That's right folks, we almost had a law saying that if a student wanted to claim that the earth is 6,000 years old and that all life on it was made by an Invisible Spirit, then they could and they'd have no fear of being told they were WRONG.
Again, it amazes me and scares the hell out of me all at once, to think that something like this could go so far in our government. If you're hitting someone over the head with a board, and we take the board away and tell you to stop, are we discriminating against you?
In his veto message, Brad Henry wrote that students are already allowed to express their faith through prayer and other activities during school. He said the vague language of the measure "may trigger a number of unintended consequences that actually impede rather than enhance such expression." It could create a mountain of litigation because it charged educators with determining what constitutes legitimate religious expression. Plus any fringe organization could masquerade as religions and advocate dangerous or offensive behaviors without penalty. Hello, hate speech.
Louisiana, Florida, and now Oklahoma have had to deal with these measures. Right now the bill is dead, but it might possibly get resurrected in the future (after all, this was the second time a bill with this wording was introduced). We just need to keep watch and keep speaking out about this crap.

Oklahoma must be an intellectual hell hole for you at times.
As long as we oppose their effort...we will prevail. If we give up or ignore the threat, they will win.
" (CNN) -- School administrators in Ohio voted Friday to begin the process of firing a middle school teacher accused of burning a cross into a student's arm and refusing to keep his religious beliefs out of the classroom.

The Mount Vernon School Board passed a resolution to terminate the employment of John Freshwater, an eighth-grade science teacher for the past 21 years.
Freshwater, according to an independent report, used an electrostatic device to mark a cross on the arm of one of his students, causing pain to the student the night of the incident and leaving a mark that lasted for approximately three weeks.
According to the Ohio Department of Education, the student's family has filed a lawsuit.
Freshwater was also reprimanded several times for refusing to move his Bible from his classroom desk and teaching creationism alongside evolution, according to the 15-page independent report. The report also cites evidence that Mr. Freshwater told his students that "science is wrong because the Bible states that homosexuality is a sin and so anyone who is gay chooses to be gay and is therefore a sinner."
The Board of Education of the Mount Vernon City School District met in special session Friday to address the case.
Freshwater has the option to contest the process by requesting a formal hearing before the Board of Education. Neither Freshwater nor his attorney could be reached by CNN for comment. "
I can't fucking add a thing.

God vs. Darwin in Europe
--------------------------------
Europe's main human rights body will vote on a proposal next week to defend the teaching of evolution and keep creationist and intelligent design views out of science class in state schools in its 47 members. The unusual move shows that a U.S. trend for religiously based attacks on the theory of evolution is also worrying European politicians, who now see such arguments put forward in their countries by Christian and Islamic groups.
A report for the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly says the campaign against evolution has its roots "in forms of religious extremism" and is a dangerous attack on scientific knowledge.
Creationism teaches God created the world and all beings in it, as depicted in the Bible. Polls in the United States show about one-half of U.S. residents agree with this, while most Europeans support the theory of evolution.

It's not like they're gonna put "I really didn't like it. The plot is tiresome, the characters are shallow, and the you can't hear the dialog during the quiet parts" on their fucking movie cover, now are they? And really, other than the moron I described above, does anyone go by this to pick out an unknown movie:
"Riveting!" "An edge-of-your-seat adventure!" "Hilariously funny!!"
Those words mean nothing to me, you fucking corporate advertising scum!
