This afternoon that little voice inside told me to head over to Xenia, to Wickline's Garden Store.
It was a free-for-all with me and the plants -
A lily or three there, marigolds, coleus, herbs, sweet william, and more....
Then home to my house and the garden I'm finally getting around to digging in:
the garden that was a big pile of last autumn's leaves, rotting and filled with worms, YES!
Into the ground with the herbs, the squash plants and collards
the brussels sprouts - into the ground!
Greensand added, and good rotten straw for mulch....
That's along the side of the yard, and it's looking good - it's feeling fine.
Out back in the sharing garden, more mulch laid down -
tomorrow more plants go in.
Out front, just before the rain began, I put marigolds into the too-dry soil.
It wasn't too dry for long.
And by the deck steps, in the little pool, there are tiny baby guppies -
big enough to eat new-hatched mosquito larvae, and
small enough that no raccoon can catch them.
Oh, back in the garden again--------
mud under the old fingernails,
a familiar soreness in the body.
Perhaps when I die I'll be compost or ash
to nourish another garden.

This year I got three bulbs of some kind of yellow blooming Lili and three red Ranunculus. I potted them, and after that I saw that in zone 3 where I'm at they might not make it through the winter. However as they were both less than 5 bucks, and the fact that I don't like to bring plants in the house for the winter, next year something else.
By the way ants, I don't care about it's the Termites or as they call them up here, Carpenter ants, I need to keep out of my trees.
Richard, you might enjoy hardy daylilies... You can even eat the tubers if you're so inclined.
Anne, and Rosa, stop by - I'll give you some tomatoes in a few weeks. (c:*
Pat - I get such a kick out of guppies. i never tire of expectant mothers and teeny weeny babies and the dancing flame-tailed dads.

Carolion, the older I get the more I feel that way:)
I love geting my hads dirty in the garden - in the spring and in the fall. Summer is unbearable around here. I just throw water on it and hope it all survives.
