After the Floods-Things Don't Appear as Bad as First Predicted

My husband and I decided to take a drive this weekend to view the farm lands and see how bad the floods had affected the crops.

We ran through Wright, Webster, Hamilton and Humboldt counties in Iowa.

The good news: the crops seem to be in pretty good shape, I saw sprouts were lakes of water had been.

Soybeans are doing very well and corn isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Now to see if the weather holds out long enough for our neighbors to the south, Missouri, to dry up.

Things here on Iowa Street in Iowa City, Iowa down the street from the University of Iowa and the Iowa River are OK as well.

It looks like a good week of sunny weather has helped a lot, but this week might see the rain return. I'm sure glad Fulton had the foresight to build a sturdy dike several decades ago -- we lived through the '65 flood here and my brother and I both had pneumonia then (lost a piano too). Hope it all gets better soon. Also since so much of the earth is covered with water, it's probably high time we learned to make the best of it (food-wise etc.), as our future undoubtedly lies there in the depths!

I'm in KCK and we don't have much around here that can flood, but this is THE worst tornado season in a long time. Sure, it keeps the blood pumping, but enough is really enough.

I hope everyone is able to return home and re-start their lives. In Illinois a few people are talking about moving from their home and setting up elsewhere.

glad to hear Iowa is doing good. We are dry now, but it was the wind storms and tornadoes that tore things up around here.

I am really glad you did this article. The news makes it sound much worse. I am glad they are not as bad as the news says they are. Why does the media like to get and keep us upset all the time?

Just heard the Mississippi is supposed to crest at 37.2 ft. this week, in St. Louis, and that's if there's no more rain. Even downstream, around Memphis, flooding is causing a backup of river traffic.

It's not over yet, but I hope the worst of it is.

My cousin in MO got very lucky. The levee by his house gave away, but the second one held it. If it would not have held, he would have been flooded. I hope things keep getting better.
