"Hey Othello, wake up, wake up. It's late afternoon and you are sleeping away the first day of summer. I'm going out walking. I hear the birds singing...I think Papa put some new bird seed in the feeders. You know what that means, don't you? Red cardinal for supper or maybe a tasty little finch? What, you don't want to get up? Oh you were out all night catting last night? The Mistress isn't going to like that!

"Looks like that old Othello cares more about romps in the dark and hangin' out with loose women. I don't know why the Mistress puts up with him. The Mistress says he's like the Prodigal Son...some son I would say! Good thing he's not Catholic...he would spend every Saturday afternoon in the Confessional. Nope, he's Will's cat and follows the Jewish faith. I don't think they have confessions...but then again, what do I know. I'm a good little Catholic girl. I mind my p's and q's! Well, we certainly aren't getting anywhere in here. Why don't you follow me outside...I want to show you my world."

This is the front porch. It's a lovely place to hang out on a rainy day. Papa has hung some lovely bird hangers here and you just can't believe how easy it is to nab one of those little flying things".

The Mistress planted catnip right here...it's the blue flower that is waving in the wind.

"On the other side are Evening Primroses. The Mistress says that is a good Irish plant....this year it has exceeded expectations and is taking over many of the gardens. I told her earlier in the Spring that she needed to give some away, but did she listen? Nah, she was too busy on that computer...fritting her time away. Now look what she has...a garden full of flowers that come out in the night!"

"Oh my, look whose taking a sunbath. Is that you Mama?

"Sophia, don't draw attention to me. I am in my hunting mode right now. I'm waiting for little Miss Mousey to come out from the stone wall. I know she's in there because I saw her pink nose just minutes ago. Are you giving a tour of the place?

"We'll leave Mama alone right now. She's busy hunting for our Solstice Feast and we'll go down and see Mistress Mary. The Mistress does some mumbly-jumbly stuff with beads here...but I just like hangin' out and getting a good scratch from the lady...."

"Now that was good. Let's carry on...."

"The Mistress really should do some weeding around here. It's a bit overgrown."

"I wonder if the girl is sitting up on her chair? Let me take a peek."

"Nope, she's not laying around today reading in her favorite spot. Let's go around the side of the house and see if she's there. Maybe, just maybe, she's down the pond."

"There's her wildlife garden....it was for her son Aaron, who I heard from the other boys, was a wild thing himself. Just wildflowers go there and the Mistress never weeds it. What grows, grows...what doesn't, doesn't. My Mistress sure is eccentric."

"Further down the path, one can see the pond."

"So that's the place. Nice little hideaway, wouldn't you say? Let's go back up front...I'm exhausted...I think I'll take a little nap in the steamer chair."

"Oh, darn, the Mistress has it!"

"Guess I need to find some place else. Oh, look, there's Mama."

"Well, thanks for stopping by...hope you enjoyed the tour of my little world. Have to go...need to take my afternoon nap. You know, naps are really good for you. Most writers I know take naps! Bye!"

Elizabeth, you have it all in your little corner of paradise, this is just lovely. Be sure to give Sophie an extra treat for taking me on a wonderful tour. You all are so lucky to have this wonderful spot to call home.
Thanks so much for posting this to

I did not know Othello was Sophie's boy...But they look so much alike...What a lovely garden, ours is so tiny...nothing like rest for a tired mind like a garden.
A nap. what a capital idea...need more of those...
Love all your flowers...
Your article is Featured in the Triple Name Club.
And your lady is definitely an awesome gardener.
I explained that it wasn't bob, it was Sophie's photo essay and he shook his head and went to get another beer. :)
I grew up on this little pond and so when my eleven years of roaming were over (Alaska, California, Illinois) back to the pond I came. We actually bought this piece of property with a tiny little cottage in '75 for $14,000 sight unseen, when we lived in Alaska. We thought it would be a neat place to come on vacations in the summer. At the time, we never actually thought we would move back here. Funny, how things change.
It is hard to leave the place in the summer but I do have roaming feet....so at least two or three times a week I actually get up steam to go somewhere! This coming week, although school got out last Monday, I have a 5 day workshop (to prepare for all-day kindergarten) to attend from 8-2. Not looking forward to it but once I go I will get into the routine.
Othello is actually Will's cat but I couldn't let Will take him to DC and be an "inside kitty". I doubt he would have survived a week caged up in an apartment.
The Blue heron stone was given to us by our neighbors shortly after our son Aaron died. I think we found the perfect place for it.
And the only cat that graces my outdoors is Gus, my Frankencat. He's certainly no Sophie.
Faeries are my best friends...they keep me company on nights the Mistress forgets to let me in the house. I would never eat faeries, gnomes or other mystical creatures.
Sophie
Lena is correct. Tuck doesn't have a chance of taking the upper hand with the kitties...they were here first, he was the late-comer and so he bows to them.
Othello is Sophie's Uncle. The genealogy goes like this: After the fire, Will and Zach went to the Pound and brought home two kitties, Holly Go Lightly and Turtle. Holly gave birth to Ophelia and Othello and five others that were given away. Ophelia gave birth to Nigel and Sophia. Holly, Turtle and Nigel all were eaten by coyotes. So just as the cats create mayhem with all the voles, moles, mice, etc in their garden paradise...so too do the fishers, foxes and coyotes. Some say I should have "inside cats" but I am a great believer in "Live Free or Die"....and so my kitties are free to roam.
Tell Ross to come on over and bring a beer and we can sit together and talk about "bare feet"!
This is just a small piece...one third of an acre...it just looks big! We actually only have 90 feet on the pond. Across the pond, Mom has 5 acres...now that would be something to plant in gardens.
Sophie is the "Queen of Gather"...she does not stoop to soil her paws! Definitely not a worker!
Gus is no Sophie...but then again, we shouldn't judge on outward appearances. Got to love the tenacity for life Gus has!
I loved your pictures of the Santa Barbara Solstice Parade. Next year, maybe Sophie will don a costume and come out and participate!
I have mud under my fingernails too...never the lady!
I did not realize catnips had such tall blue flowers! I thought they were delphiniums at first. I love them... I think I'll take some home from the nursery on my next trip buying trip!
I've been thinking...although we only own a third of an acre on the pond, we back up to over 100 acres of woodland, forests, meadows and two other ponds. So the kitties can roam at woods. Just yesterday, Papa and I did the hike through the forest with Tuck and Sophia and Ophelia came along for the walk.
They do love to play hide and seek among the hostas and greenery. Never know when you might find a tail or a leg sticking out from under some bush.
Duckie: The cats really do love the catnip...I have it planted in three places in the yard for them. Having their own plants, they leave the rest alone. Cat nip also looks quite wonderful in the garden...very much like Russian sage.
The gardens are interesting this year...but I do need to rethink some things...the Evening primroses really need to be downsized. I can't believe all these primroses came from three little plants 2 or 3 years ago. But of course I wasn't out in the gardens too much this spring doing what I should of been doing cause every week-end it rained.
Thanks so much for posting to All Photo Essays Here!

Jimbo, our tiger kitty sends purrs your way and Mini Kitty Fluffball says she liked the tour, but enjoys a visit to her secret garden over romping with an obnoxious dog around.
Such a lovely place you have Bob, I'll bookmark it to visit once more in the morning:)
