Unfortunately, I did not achieve my goals of creating a better safety net and getting better health insurance coverage for all Americans. However, speaking from experience, better health insurance coverage does not equate to better health care - and it certainly doesn't guarantee better health.
Start by getting briefed. Then determine what is most important to you - the issues where you want to have the most influence. At the end of the game, you will know whether you were true to your values by how many of the issue badges you earned. I successfully met my goals for energy indpendence, but maybe national security is more important to you. The fun part is - you get to choose!
You can increase or decrease funding in the areas of Defense/Diplomacy, Schools/Kids, Science/Nature, Housing/Living, Infrastructure, Health care, Social Security, Interest on Debt, Taxes and a Miscellaneous category which includes FDA funding and pork barrel spending.
The "policy cards" explain, in a nutshell, the impact each of your decisions will have. Of course, you could dissect impact to the Nth degree, but the cards (and the game) are actually quite well designed. Spend as much or as little time as you want balancing the budget. It is a user-friendly interface with a FAQs section, as well as a place to go for help. There is even a gather group area for discussion. One thing I wanted to know was how the game reflects the actual federal budget. According to Budget Hero™:
"The game relies primarily on the budget model and forecasts in the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) "Long Term Fiscal Outlook." We grouped together the CBO budget categories into fewer building categories to simplify the game.
Playing Budget Hero™ was not just a fun challenge; it taught me something about choices and gave me what I'm sure is just a taste of how difficult it must be to really balance the budget. Oh, the pork - the compromise - the sacrifice - the waste - the inevitable backlash! It was actually a fascinating exercise. If you like computer games, Budget Hero™ is for you. For those who are truly interested in challenging presidential and congressional candidates, playing this game is a must. Plus, I challenge you to produce a better budget than I was able to.The CBO provides specific budget forecasts for the next ten years and then makes assumptions about growth after the ten-year period, based on economic and inflation forecasts. American Public Media journalists altered the baseline CBO budget in a couple of cases to ensure the game reflects the current political debate. For example, the game assumes that President Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts continue beyond 2010 even though they are set to expire. The reason is that the current political debate assumes the cuts will continue and frames the issue as whether to end or partially roll them back. The game gives players the choice to end or roll back the cuts, along with many other tax and fee options.
If you play no cards, Budget Hero™ shows how today's government commitments and plans will affect the budget in the future. As players select policy cards, the baseline budget is adjusted to reflect year-by-year increases or decreases in spending. Some cards, like withdrawing troops from Iraq may increase spending in the next few years before they lead to savings in later years."
If you post your summary, I'll post mine...

el, I'd like to see your "summary" sheet when you're done.
However, reading this makes me want to get out there and try it, if nothing more than for the educational experience of it. If I get a chance to do it the next few days, I'll let you know my results.
Thank you for reviewing the game!
If Obama gets us out of Iraq thus reducing the spending there for the contractors and the military.
If Obama gets a Treasurer like Reuben that knows how to manage and disburse money well
And if he cuts the income taxes.
And if the democrats can hold off spending all the revenue.
Then the revenue could be used to reduce the national debt.
That will raise the value of the dollar.
That will reduce the cost of the commodities, gas, food, and other items driven by the price of commodities, which will all then go down.
The Long Bond (30 year) will rise to around 8 to 9 percent interest and other fed bonds and notes will moderate.
However, the more important issue is the Health care solution. I feel that if those that can afford a health care plan pay for it either trough their employment or out right paying for it, and the government only helping those that can't afford a health care plan by two things at the same time. First by giving one a tax break for what they need to pay for a health care plan. Second to out-right pay for a health care plan through the Medicaid state run program. These two methods will keep the federal government out of the health care mess, thus leaving the competition to the private sector.
The automation of the medical records will improve the health care system in the US and the competition will improve the delivery of the health care system.
This then would be implemented very similar to the Auto Insurance and the Fire and Causality Insurance programs in the US. Thus giving the person a choice.
Also of note that old statement, 'if it can't be measured it can't be managed' makes measurement of the health care insurance programs and the health care providers and hospitals a more important issue.
As the revenue for the social security program is rising every year, and the age for retirement is also rising every year this is really a manageable issue and will be solvent for quite awhile as is.
Think of how many husbands and wives are arguing over things like: do we buy a new riding lawn mower - or do we send our little boy to hockey camp. The Budget Hero game makes you realize that it really does have a lot to do with personal values. But when you're sitting in congress, just how much of a role ought your personal values play?
I have bookmarked it for later.
Thanks.
Thanks Diana

I will give it a try too. let's hope Obama is playing it!
Thanks for the link.
I want to see what Diana thinks is fun! :)
I think the premise here is flawed. Choosing ANY heath coverage is better than the NO heath coverage millions have . . . and cheaper. Still, I'll check it out.

As a relatively recent college graduate living in a foreign country, I got a lot from these postings. It's interesting to hear about other people's experiences. As far as health care goes, I have a dentist appt. on Wednesday. I will pay 10 euros. And that is all I will have to pay even if I go back the next day and the next and the next. But 40% might have a little something to do with that.
This sounds like fun. I think my friends would love it, since we all talk about this when we get together for pot-luck once a month.
Thanks, Diana.
P.S. Did I see you in Womens Writers Guild?
I cut the national debt in half by 2018 and shrank the size of government some.
I think the key is common sense.
You can't fix everything at once, you have to pick what you feel is most important.
I would cut military funds (not drastically, but some), bring the troops home gradually, end the Bush tax cuts to the wealthy, have the wealthy pay more for Medicare, etc..., invest in infrastructure, cut our dependence on foreign oil by investing in 'green' industries and innovation, assist the poor by funding things such as child care (so they could go to work), and other things.
Why oh why are real Home Economics classes not begin taught in school?
(Funny, Jared!)
This game sounds fascinating and fun! Thank you so much for telling me about it, this is definitely one of those American intellectual novelties that we not only haven´t heard about in Europe, but can´t get. But since I am coming back to California in just a couple of weeks, I´ll be on the lookout for it.
Fun...
I just wanted to stop by since I am finally going through what is now listed as under 4,600 pieces of gather new mail that is sitting in my inbox on here.
With that mentioned I just came across either a mailing from you yourself, or someone else brought this piece to my attention. You or they felt that your creation should be shared with the gather community, which I am very glad that it was passed on to me to view. So I wanted to say Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to publish it here on gather for us to all view. :o)
As well before I leave you I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year... in 2009 :o)
