Bill C-51 does NOT ban supplements. In Under Bill C-51, any supplement that makes an actual health claim (such as curing cancer or treating asthma) would have to be validated by the Canadian health department. This is similar to the U.S. laws, which is why supplements often use "wishy-washy" language and include disclaimers like "These statements have not been validated by the food and drug administration." It would also require homeopathic remedies to list potential side effects. For example, some essential oils that are popular with homeopaths, particularly sage, or uterine stimulants (which means excessive use can cause a spontaneous miscarriage!). The law would require such warnings. The bill would also standardize labeling so if you buy brade A version St. John's Wort, it is using the same terminology for use as brand B.

There is some language in the bill that people should be cautious over, but for the most part these are either reinforcements of existing laws or positive changes to provide consistency to the homeopathic market. As a homeopathic practitioner, I believe it is important to require companies to confirm their claims and ensure the quality of product.

People break out from too much Vitamin C in hives. You get enough in your diet.

If you look at the people making all the hub-bub, you'll see they are all tied to vitamin and supplement companies. But conspicuously absence from the complaining are the larger, established supplement companies that already abide by certain standards.

I firmly believe that natural remedies have a place in an overall wellness program, but because "natural" does not mean "harmless" they SHOULD have to meet certain standards of safety.

But you are right, Donald. These people depend on people to not go look up the facts and just jump on the "evil government/medical establishment" bandwagon.

The problem is, (and I have read the bill,) It is open (bad language) for all botanicals and supplements to be banned (source - Toronto Star). It also opens a NAFTA can of worms that would require the U.S. to adopt the same prohibition.
