Kyleigh's Story - Day Care Injury #3

Don't berate yourself... it is not that you care less, it is that Kyleigh is gaining independence, and the bumps and bruises that come are part of that growing process. We open our arms to let them walk, then run, then hurtle headlong into their futures, and the accidents along the way become part of that process. It's not that we care less, it's that our babies become stronger, able to cope and explore their new worlds, as they are supposed to do. Each scrape still hits us hard, we just learn to accept them as badges of our children's independence.

I like what Paula said. And it seems you are just getting more philosophical about it.

When my youngest was 18 months old, he had "horns" (bumps) on either side of his forehead from falling down! (he was a late walker)

Oh my...just wait...I've had calls about all kinds of injuries with my kids...it doesn't matter how much supervision they have, kids will still get her....and other kids will hurt you kid...it happens. Just wait until you get your first broken bone....or stitches.

My son at just over 2 first somehow stepped on a needle backwards...got it stuck bad enough we couldn't get it out...it was a trip to the ER. Then about 2 weeks later, he fell right in front of me trying to get on my husband's back (hubby was tying his shoe)...we didn't realize how hurt he was...it took 3 trips to the ER and 22 xrays to find out he broke his left tibia...then as soon as he got the cast off his leg, he got chicken pox....and all this time I was pregnant.

You don't care less - every day you care and love her more. It's when the injury happens that's very bad (and I truly hope it never does), that you'll tend to react with total panic. These are normal at that age. You're a great Mom!

There will be countless more cuts, bumps, and bruises. You can not pervent each one from happening. It all a part of her growing up a little more and more each day. Give it another year and she will be getting more and more. If she is anything like my Xaiver. He is a dare devil and willing to try anything at least once. It drives me nuts, because hes always got bumps and bruises from his crazyness.

You dont care any less then you did yesterday or weeks ago. You are just seeing that she is growing more and more everyday. With that comes new things, including cuts, bumps, and bruises.

Please don't be mad at the daycare providers, I am a preschool teacher and I have to tell you it is not always easy to keep after so many kiddos. We try our best, but can't prevent every boo-boo that comes along the way. Somethings happen in the blink of an eye. I know it is upsetting, but sometimes it is out of our control. I don't know what the ratio for your center is, but ours is 5:1 for infants-just turned 2 yrs old 10:1 for 2-10 yr olds. But still 1 person caring after 5 infants is a huge undertaking, one we love, but still difficult. Can you imagine the 10:1 for the 2-10's? let me tell ya... there are days I just want to crawl back into bed!
Just remember, children will get injured from time to time, even in your own care, you can't always prevent it!
It is perfectly normal though to be defensive about your child, and I do understand your frustrations. I was like that too before I actually worked for a preschool!

Kyleigh is growing up, more adventurous and quick to run and jump. Accidents happen so quickly and are just that, accidents. You are seeing a more independent Kyleigh at home, so you can understand and accept that she will get a few boo boos. She sure is a little cutie!

I don't think I can count high enough to list all the cuts, scrapes, bruises, etc. that I had as a child. I was the youngest of six and my mother would often have to take up to three children to the doctor at once for stitches and such. We were very active and inquisitive children, so we were always getting hurt.

Yes I know it happens. And yes, she fell in front of my eyes too. I do know it is very hard for the teachers at day care to keep up with all the kids. I am not really "mad" mad.... I just "wish" they could have done better (but I know I am not doing perfectly either).

Did you ever fall down when you were little, I bet you did, I know I did, lots of time. Was always tripping over my own feet. Ha ha ha ha, in fact I still do once in awhile. I was out running once with two of our dogs and tripped myself and skinned up my bare leg. I was wearing shorts at the time. Like Beth said Accidents happen, a part of growing up. Not the first boo boo she will get. she will be coming to get bandaids for all the scrapes and bruises.
