All of a sudden, the gasoline worries have hit the fan here in the USA and the news is full of politicians ranting about this or that. Examples:
- McCain proposes the construction of 45 new nuclear power plants
- McCain (and Bush) proposes drilling for oil on the outer continental shelf, up to 200 miles offshore of the east coast and Florida.
- McCain explicity distances himself from the famous Cheney lifestyle sneer. Remember when Cheney sneered that energy conservation is a nice lifestyle choice but it has nothing to do with energy policy back in 2002? "In the face of climate change and other serious challenges, energy conservation is no longer just a moral luxury or a personal virtue," said McCain yesterday. "Conservation serves a critical national goal." Very nice, mcCain, but I notice that you had lots of proposals to obtain more fuels, and no proposals to conserve them.
- Obama criticized the drilling idea- "At best you're looking at five years or more down the road and even the most optimistic assumptions indicate that offshore drilling might reduce the overall world price of oil by a few cents."
- Obama proposed a windfall profits tax on oil companies.
- On Tuesday, The U.S. Senate blocked debate of a bill to offer about $17.7 billion in tax incentives for consumers to build renewable energy sources like windmills and solar arrays, and buy plug-in cars that run on electricity rather than gasoline. The Energy Independence and Tax Relief Act of 2008 would have extended a tax credit to build windmills by one year through Dec. 31, 2009, and extend for three years similar credits for renewable energy sources like biomass, geothermal, landfill gas and trash combustion. Senate, what were you thinking? You throw money at anything that moves, then this comes along and you freeze.
I believe that we are flailing around here in a partisan atmosphere trying to come up with something sensible. 45 nuclear power plants are not going to happen any time soon, and neither is offshore drilling. We need an answer yesterday, which means we needed to start work 5 years ago. Instead we did nothing. Mccain's proposals sound a little less right wing and pompous than Bush's, but he is singing from the same hymnal largely. Obama has some great points about the need to actually spend some money on renewables. The windfall profits tax is not a great plan, because it will be funded by us the consumers, but if you ask me to feel sorry for Exxon, I cannot manage that either. They could have used some of those billions to become the powerhouse of Solar, but they chose a different road: eventual corporate irrelevance at best or extinction at worst.
Solar is the eventual answer to electrical power- and with the help of plug in vehicles it would address transportation as well. If it is the eventual answer why waste time on stop gap measures, why not throw some serious money at solar? It's probably cheaper than 45 nuclear plants, no kidding. And the recent book that I read entitled "The world without us" made the point that if we should all drop dead tomorrow our major legacy to the other living things of the planet would be death, cancer, and mutations for several millenia from our nuclear meltdown mess. Ideally of course the human race will not all drop dead tomorrow, but still, it makes a guy think.
yes we need energy and we need it now, but let's not just talk about reducing our energy use. Let's enjoy these painful and horrendous price increases, because they may actually compel us to do more about reducing our use of energy than just talking.
As for Cheney and Bush, i do not merely wish to move on and forget. I want to punish McCain for belonging to the same political party they belong to, even if he is willing to quibble about one or two nonessentials. He is deep in Bush's money pocket and can't get out, and the resemblances between them outweigh the distinctions in my view. McCain is not an idiot? Okay, maybe not, but he cannot become president without the help of Bush's idiot backers- so he might as well be an idiot.

Chris, I think you missed the mark by about 30 years. We had shots fired across the bow in the '70s while we were sitting in lines on odd/even days and what was done? Partisan bickering and finger pointing may bring relief for those looking for a boogeyman but it ignores the fact that Dems and Reps are equally remiss and have been for decades. There is plenty of blame to go around for our addiction to oil but the onus should be on those who call themselves leaders, regardless of party affiliation, for having the foresight of an adolescent.
There isn't a MACHINE on the Planet that doesn't run on OIL!!!
Drilling is the answer RIGHT NOW. We are not going to change the entire fleet of cars in the United States tomorrow. Wake up. Kennedy won't be allowing windmills off of HIS coastline any time soon. WAKE UP. We need to accept responsibility for our slumber, GET HAMMERED UNTIL THE OIL STARTS TO FLOW, and get started DRILLING, NOW!!!
Meantime, get to work on alternate technologies. This isn't going to happen tomorrow, EITHER. WAKE UP! Clinton didn't do a FUCKING thing EITHER; GET OVER IT!
Drill NOW, get started on alternatives, and STOP YOUR FUCKING WHINING, YOU IDIOTS!
I've had it with stupidity.
Wind power is coming on line very quickly and solar is likely to be following soon. Through feeding the grid and better storage capacity they will be able to make up a major part of our energy supply. Electric/gasoline hybrids are also in the works, which means plug-in vehicles not dependent on oil for normal city driving. Energy usage should also get more and more efficient, and conservation should increase.
We need to work as hard as possible to transition to this new economy. Europe and China are ahead of us. Offshore drilling doesn't alter the equation that much--it might help get us through a rough transition period but at a high environmental cost. Nuclear is expensive and had big liability problems--at this point wind can out-compete it, and solar should in the next few years.
Alternatives will NOT happen tomorrow; neither will RETOOLING! Every mechanical device in the World runs with oil. Not only ON it, WITH it.
ALL engines run with oil, whether you find it convenient or not. It's called L-U-B-R-I-C-A-T-I-O-N.
WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!!
Because it is so related to this thread, I post below recent comments I made on a similar thread:
How many have went past the "sound bites" of all of this USA-ALASKA oil issue ??? How many have watched the video on U-Tube by Lindsey Williams about how the companies up there are hiding the truth from us ???
Check this out: www.video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3340274697167011147 ... it is so much more than a sound bite ... and well worth the time spent IF one REALLY cares about the Oil Issue.
PS ... could it be possible that the price of oil being jacked up as it is, could be a manufactured event to get us folks to release ANWR to those folks ... ?? While we think there is a shortage and they know what they have, and want to add to it, will serve their purposes for a very long time ... later claiming; "surprise surprise ... gee, I guess there was more oil there then we thought" ... how many people here really think these people are above all of that ???
Wake up is a good warning ... but will we ? I doubt it.
What do we do during the 12 hours of no sun? What do we do with the lag time between finding oil and putting it in our tank? What about the millions of years it takes to make oil to begin with? It's true we are set up to run on oil, our stupidity. So we should keep on doing it, "stay the course"? It takes 5-10 years to get the oil here, it takes 5-10 years to shift to renewables. That argument against change does not hold water.
Solar power pretty much matches demand for electricity, which peaks during the day. Nonetheless, there are alternatives, such as wind energy, hydro, stored energy. Even if facilities to store energy are included to provide electricity around the clock, concentrated solar thermal energy is competitive. Additionally, wind energy is very, very cheap and we're getting a lot of wind turbines that produce a lot of energy at night when demand is low. It makes sense to store such surplus in car batteries or in the form of hydrogen. There's a range of clean and safe technologies and each area should decide what suits their circumstances best.
All of this is possible, it has not been done in the past because coal is cheaper. Coal however changes climate, which solar does not.
You could build a bunch of solar power stations for the price of 45 nuclear plants. It is notable that utilities are hoping that the feds will help pay for the nuclear plants. Do the feds help pay for solar plants? no.
Wow. Are you a troll or are you really that short-sighted? People like you are why they can stick it to us so easily. They are either paying you to spew this crap or they have you convinced it takes, what?, decades to implement new technologies. Thank God Thomas Edison didn't have your philosophy or sponsors. They've been working with these technologies since the 70's. Just like Rex-T. refers to. I was there. Do you think they didn't start then? BS. They just don't want to move forward with new technologies any faster than they have to. There's too much money in oil.
L-U-B-R-I-C-A-T-I-O-N.... Tell me you didn't think that was cute or clever.
Bush not an idiot? I btter not get started, otherwise this whole article gets an adult rating. Did everyone read the article in Rolling Stone? Read it, if you haven't yet!
Here's the link:

the denying global warming thing though, that was not idiot, that was just liar.
