The first response I got from a few people who had known Sally was that she was scared of black people. Perhaps this story got handed down because she spent a good deal of her life among Caucasians. Numerous sources said she lived from a young age with the Bonzo family who where white. I think more than likely this story sprouted from another story widely told about Sally. It happened sometime around the turn of the century. Sally was out in the garden working along side Ben Bonzo. He was tilling. She was hoeing. A black man on foot happened upon the garden where they were working. He had purposely walked quite a way. The black men asked Ben if he knew of a woman that he might take as a wife. Ben was always known as quite the joker. By the opposite token, Sally was always spoken of as being quiet and shy. Ben replied, "I don't know, but you might want to ask this lady over here." The whole situation gave Sally such a scare that she dropped her hoe and ran all the way back to the house hiding behind the door until the man was gone.
