Friends and family filled adjoining rooms spilling out through the screen door into the yard. Men discussed politics and farming with noses turned towards a culinary mix of aromas filling the house. Women busily prepared tables with offerings of their finest. There were the old timers down to the newest edition being passed to Miss Sally. She was known for her fine cooking and her pleasing way with children. As other children ran and played, one curious little boy made his way up to Sally's side picking up her skirt to take a peek. Sally, good naturedly, turned to the wide-eyed little boy and said, "Yes, I'm black all the way up."

I would add in some of the dishes that would have been served in that time period, to get us right in the scene.
