Today (June 15th) marks the first day of Summer Solstice Fortnight. What is Summer Solstice Fortnight? Well, it's the two weeks that surround the Summer Solstice. It's the fortnight in the Summer where the length of the days changes the least. Here in Atlanta, it only changes 1 minute during this time period, and that actually falls on the Summer Solstice day (June 21).
Why am I bothering even noticing this day? Well, for one... I got tired of waiting for the Summer Solstice, so I needed something to occupy my mind with. Also, it is something to help gear up for the actual Summer Solstice celebration. You know how Christmas has that build up time between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Well, it's kinda like that.
So why celebrate the Summer Solstice? Well, for those who don't know the significance of the Summer Solstice, it is the longest day of the year. Hence, the Summer Solstice Fortnight covers the time period of a week before and a week after the Summer Solstice.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is that since we lack A/C, it is nice to celebrate the beginning of the shortening of the days. As the days get shorter, the days should get cooler.
Unfortunately, the days immediately after the Summer Solstice also tends to be the hottest of the year, despite the fact that the days are getting shorter.... But anything to help keep the mind off the heat, at least for a few moments is still worth noting. And to do anything that no one else (or only a few people) is doing is worth doing. (I'm a non-conformist at heart.)
So, again, Happy Summer Solstice Fortnight!
May your days get shorter and cooler!
