If you are a one or two car family, how much do you spend on gas (ONLY GAS) per month? A guess-ti-mate is fine.
It would help if you note whether you are a one or two car family. I know gas prices have not been predictable so if you want to go with last month or even this month, although it is only about 1/2 through the month, fine. For comparison's sake, the average family is supposed to drive 12,000 miles per year. If that sounds high, think about this: that is 1,000 miles a month, or 250 miles a week or 35 miles a day. At least one person in our family drives 17 miles each way to work (there and back, 17 miles to get there). So that is pretty close to that 35 miles a day - right there.
Here is our input:
we are a two car family but are trying to use only one car most of the time. One person here has to drive 17 miles to work or 34 miles round trip. That is about $8 a day in gas if he gets 17 mpg. Sometimes he does much better but much of the drive is in city traffic, no way around it, lots of stops and starts.
The gas prices are really taking a toll - on many of us, I know. I'd like to know how much of a chunk you think they take from your paycheck and if you've found great ways to cut down on gas use. I work primarily from home and one reason is because of the gas prices. An aging parent, special needs child and other factors are important too.
So how much do you think you spend on gas per month?

We are spending about $80 a week on gas, so that would be $320 a month.
So $320/mo approx.

My wake-up moment? I had to hire a student to help drive my son to tutoring since I work and I need to work on deadline for as many hours as I can. Paying the student and paying for the student's gas was cheaper than maintaining one of our cars. I really could wait for my husband to get home from work and use HIS car if not for my son's schedule during the summer. So, for now, I'm not driving my car more than necessary...and thinking about how much we'd save if we used one car rarely. Of course, giving up one car would save even more - no car insurance for it (we already don't have car payments, paid in full), no plate fees, no maintenance, etc.
May - 126.60 (we did have an out of state wedding)
April - 86.27
March - 61.00
February - 92.01 (I'm guessing one of these fill-ups must have been close to the end of the month, explaining why the March number is so low.)
January - 65.00
And so far in June, $45.00.
Gas prices really aren't our problem. It's the prices on everything else that have gone up because of gas prices. I know I'm spending a lot more on groceries.
My husband calls when he leaves work to see if there is anything he needs to do on the way home. That also cuts down on the errands I run.
Compared to a car, insurance, maintenance and gas, she is saving money. When it comes to church, friends pick her up, as they do for movies and other occasions. She chips in on gas and everyone is happy.
For us in the other two cars, we spend about 40 to 60 a week total. That is 5 days of work and golf which is a good drive away 2 days a week.
I retired my gas mower and now have nothing that runs on gas or oil. That's trendy, and sort of on topic too.
I only put about 30 miles a week on my car. I used to spend $25 a month on gas and never got to empty. Now I spend $35 a month but that is only about half a tank now. Still, I'm never on empty.
I know I should bike more to work but it seems there is never time or the weather makes it impossible. Can't show up all sweaty and smelly. LOL Also we do not have a bike friendly city so riding is difficult.
