This has come up on Gather as well as with my family and co workers. I've been admonished for hoarding and that's not what I'm doing. I looked up the definitions on Wikipedia. Hoarding is defined as the aquisition of, and failure to use or discard large numbers of seemingly useless possessions that it causes significant impairment to basic living activities such as cooking, cleaning, showering or sleeping. Pictures are shown of rooms so cluttered as to prohibit walking. Stockpiling is simply defined as a pile or storage location for bulk materials.
Recently, I went to Rite Aide to pick up 1 or 2 containers of liquid laundry soap on sale for $1.99 only to find out that a customer had just cleaned out the supply by buying 20! According to how I view these two definitions, I was stockpiling while he was hoarding. I bring this up because a lot of people are concerned about diminished supplies due panic buying. (don't bame anyone for worrying these days)
What do you think, Gatherers?

Some would say I hoard things, but I don't hear them complaining when I am able to feed 20 people at the drop of a hat without having to leave the house to go get something. It's all in how you look at it.
I do have a bunch of food in my house at all times. Even when it's time for me to go grocery shopping, I probably still have more food than a lot of people do after they finish their shopping, but I just consider that smart shopping. Winters are horrible here, and there are sometimes several weeks (6 or more) in a row, where I don't take my toddler out. I have to rely on my husband to get the things that we need (like milk), and he doesn't like grocery shopping by himself, so we eat from our stored food for a long time during times like those!
This is not hoarding but being conservative.
I have way to much stuff...several sets of dishes, and I live alone..only need one set...two if one is for more formal entertaining. I don't need every scrap of paper with writing on it either....but i'm doing alot better with this, especially since I moved a few months ago...people even comment to me how much better this place looks!
