I don't agree with this totally - if they ask for one you buy it for them without complaint. My husband has learned this over the years. When I wanted a KitchenAid Mixer, he bought one for me. He has gotten quite a lot of baked goods from it so it was worth his money. When I asked for a new vacuum cleaner, I got it.

Just don't buy that for a birthday or anniversary.
