Another Gather Gliche? You Having This One?
by Marilyn Mackenzie
I was "managing" my groups today and made some strange discoveries. I have to admit that I don't manage my groups as often as I should. If I did I would have noticed this gliche before. Well, I think I would have.
As some of you know, I publish the Daily Whine & Shine each day and the Weekend Chew & Stew on weekends. (I didn't make the titles clickable on purpose. Most likely they'll appear at other items by this author underneath the article.)
Those two things were created so that people have a place to vent, rant, throw a tantrum, and yell, "Oh shuckie darn!" - especially if they have an invisible or chronic illness. (Although everyone is welcome.) Rants about medical conditions or the medical community are encouraged. We chronic illness sufferers need a place to stomp our feet, away from friends and family.
Praise reports are also encouraged, since none of us have only bad things going on. It's good to acknowledge the good times, even if they don't happen as often as we'd like.
I "own" a few groups, Fibro Friends and Invisible Illnesses being two of them. Of course I post the Daily Whine & Shine and Weekend Chew & Stew to those two groups. Duh. Unless, perhaps, my fibro fog has taken over for the day. Then, when I notice that I have not published to these groups, I'll stop what I'm doing and edit the post to correct that.
Okay. That's how things normally work.
Today, as I was managing my groups and searching for things to feature, I noticed that my own Daily Whine & Shine didn't show up in the Invisible Illnesses group. I went back to the post and hit edit, only to discover that it actually did show in the list of groups to which I published.
Back I went to the group and the article was not there. Hmmm. I scratched my head and pondered that. Then I went and looked at a few other articles of mine and a few other groups I own and discovered that even though the articles show that they've been posted to certain groups does not mean they've ever gotten there. I guess they're tied up in cyberspace somewhere. (Note: Invisible Illnesses group is one where articles should automatically post. No approval is needed first.)
I tapped my feet and waited patiently for cyberspace to catch up with me. (Well, not so patiently.) Then I refreshed my group page and....the Daily Whine & Shine still did not show up.
Okay. I thought I was losing it. I hit edit again and checked to make sure I wasn't crazy. Nope, I was not. The post showed that it should have shown up in the Invisible Illnesses group. I hit submit, then noticed that the groups at the bottom don't show either my Fibro Friends group or the Invisible Illnesses group. (Fibro Friends is monitored, but I had just approved all content, including my own, of course.) Well, how strange.
I believe I've discovered another Gather gliche. Just because I think I'm publishing to certain groups does not necessarily make it so.
I wonder how many other posts I think I've published to groups are not there. You know, since the last update it's hard enough to get noticed...without having things NOT show up where they're supposed to be.

I do want to say, thank you SO much for the group about invisible illnesses. I have a genetic disease that melts my cartilage, and while the doctors realize that there is something wrong with me, on the outside I look like a normal 19-year-old. People don't understand why I'm only in the wheelchair sometimes, and they don't understand that I can only walk 15 minutes a day. I've had teachers try to make me do projects that I can't do with my knees, I've had all sorts of issues of people not believing me about my illness, or not understanding.
I hate that anyone has to deal with invisible illnesses (which can be really misunderstood by others), but I'm also very grateful that I'm not enduring this alone, and that I have a lot of other people who know what I'm going through. Thank you for the groups, for the places to stamp our feet and yell, and just for being a great connection on Gather. It's really appreciated.
Luckily I haven't had that problem yet, fingers crossed. Your group sounds fascinating. I have a few things I would love to vent about too. I think I will go join.
Thanks for this article, you made my day.
I have had a lot of problems recently with content not appearing properly on the groupspace page.
Here is what I suggest....
a) The next time you can't find an article, click on the "Recent Articles" heading (in green) and see if it appears there. Often it will.
b) Then clear your 'cache' and view your group again. You may also have to restart your browser.
If none of that works for you, stop by my daily article and ask me to take a peek. Sometimes content will appear differently for some members.
Good Luck!
