The practice of Feng Shui is often associated with indoor spaces, but successful practice can actually begin outdoors. Your outdoor garden or space can be improved by using the principles of Feng Shui. When doing so, you are able to create a private outdoor space full of positive energy. Although many practice the ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, skeptics can still transform their outdoor spaces into beautiful works of art by implementing all principles.
In terms of Feng Shui, your garden represents the future, namely your future. Positive chi can be achieved by reviewing the path it takes. Understanding the flow of chi in your garden or outdoor area is key to making good, positive changes.
To get started, search for negative or bad chi that can be found in your garden. It can override the good. Bad chi can be found from unnatural forces that come from cemeteries, large buildings and electrical lines. Dead end streets are also a negative sign. The good news, however, is that these negatives easily can be countered. To do so, place wind chimes, garden statues, or walkway lights pointing upwards in the area. Not only will positive energy come to the forefront, but your garden's beauty will be undeniable.
To promote the free movement of positive chi, all clutter should be removed from your garden. All dead plants should be replaced with healthy, thriving plants. This is important to create a feeling of inspiration, not frustration. Curved garden pathways encourage the free flow and movement of positive chi. For an added bonus, garden beds in the shapes of squares and rectangles are recommended.
An ideal way to get started is to sketch your dream garden and your current garden. When completed, compare the two. What changes can you make? Remember when in the final planning stages, it is important to note the elements of Feng Shui. Use the Bagua to examine and compare the segments to your life. You can then enhance the segments that you would like to see improvements in. For example, do you need help with your relationships or would you like to increase your wealth? You can do so by properly setting up your garden.
In addition to the segments you want to improve, all Chinese elements must be incorporated into your garden. These elements include wood, water, metal, earth and fire. A fun, yet attractive way to bring water into your garden is with a decorative fountain. Add a metal bench into your garden, as it allows you to relax in comfort, yet achieve prosperity. Earth can easily be added to your garden with pathways made of stepping-stones. Add the fire element to your garden with the use of lights or candles. Wood should not be lacking from your garden, as it is a natural element found in plants, trees, and shrubs.
Gardens are often associated with peace and relaxation. By incorporating all Feng Shui principles and elements into your garden, properly flowing chi will maximize the peaceful atmosphere found in yours.
