Issue #34
Greetings, Gather writers, and welcome to this issue of Freelancing for Pleasure and Profit. I've had a number of e-mails requesting another issue devoted to writing markets, so opted to do just that for this week's column.
When considering markets for publication it's always imperative to familiarize oneself with several back issues. This enables writers to show editors and publishers that in addition to knowing the kind of work they publish, they can also write in the "voice" they're accustomed to using throughout their magazine. The only way to recognize this voice is to read it....over and over again. I try to collect a half dozen back issues and read at least 6 to 8 articles per issue. If I still don't feel comfortable with the publication's voice, I go back and read some more. Sound simple? It is. Yet this simple step has afforded me publication in magazines and online publications I never dreamed would consider my work.
Check your local public library for back issues of magazines you're interested in querying. It's a great writing exercise, and it may help getting that proverbial foot in the door of the right editor's office.
Now start writing!

Thanks for being my friend.
Thanks for the links.
Thank you for taking time share this information Kimberly. Ten years ago, I began asking for submission guidelines for magazines and a few greeting card companies. Now that I have a published book under my belt, I look forward to launching out in the deep on writing for a living. I will keep my day job until my writing becomes my day job!
Along the process of editting my manuscript, I had the opportunity to speak with other writers who were experiencing self-editting woes. The people they chose were not passionate enough to complete the editting in a timely manner. Of course, this changed their deadlines and made them feel as if they spinning their wheels.
I joined this group because I saw in your writing the language I've been speaking with other writers about their "voice" in the writing. Being able to "take on the voice" of a publication will be my next venture.
Wow, Kimberly! You have sent me to my freelance writers' notes I placed way back on the shelf. I'd forgotten about that part of my desire to write once I set out to finish my book.
Iron sharpens iron ... thanks again for the tip. This is a new one I shall certainly put to use.
I would love it if you would publish this article, and others like it, to publishing outside of Gather.
;)
