Timmy might be an average kid, but The Fairly Oddparents wasn't your average cartoon show. Following in the footsteps of several other great shows, the Oddparents sparkled with jokes meant for the adults, while appealing to the baser humor (think body and potty jokes) of kids.
So I was excited about seeing a new season of the Fairly Odds on the schedule. It hadn't had new episodes on the air for several years; I was delighted to further the adventures of Timmy, Cosmo and Wanda. Then I saw the commercials for the hour-long kick-off show. In which there was debuting a fairly odd baby. Baby. One of the sure signs that a show is jumping the shark.
Little is to be gained for any show by introducing a baby to the mix. In fact, that's one of the classic signs the writers just can't come up with any new jokes and will now begin rehashing the "we're tired all the time", "isn't it cute the crazy thing Junior did" and "wow life's different with a kid" story lines. Sigh.
There were some great twists in the special episode – typical Oddparents stuff. And Poof is a cutie. (Oh, and a boy, despite the purple garb.) But it's only funny once for him to screw up one of Timmy's wishes. Every episode is a little much. Let him take a nap once in a while.
