Last year when I took my cat for her annual check-up, the blood tests results said she had the start of kidney disease. She is 18 years old so I didn't expect the results to be perfect. Her hair started to get knots and become matted, I read online that has to do with kidney disease. This is what her hair looked like with all the knots.
I waited until it grew in enough to cut it for her. This is what it looks like now.
My kitty developed kidney disease when he was 19 and lived to be almost 21 years old. He also had some strange issues with his fur - I didn't know it was related to the kidney disease though. Thanks for that info!
I didn't realize the fur matting had something to do with the kidneys. I always thought it was just because it was harder for them to groom themselves when they got older. Now I know that 's a good sign to look for. Thanks!

I think they feel better when ever you get the mats out. Did your vet suggest a special diet for the kidney disease? I know that there are some out there that really do make a difference in the quality and length of life of the cat. Cats are pretty amazing creatures and function in a compromised kidney failure state pretty well. I hope all goes well.
Bonnie, I had my kitty for 21 years. In her later years she loved laying on the stone steps in the sun and taking a morning and evening walk in the garden. Visited each and every one of HER five catnip plants which I planted for her.
