So riding out on the plane yesterday I was "fortunate" enough to sit around some mac heads. They were really stoked about the apple conference. And hey I was too! It's a chance to meet other software engineers from all over the country, maybe even the world and to see what they've been working on and talk to them. I'm all about writing software and I can't wait to see what other people have been working on. There is however one problem... I don't like Kool-aid. Yes that's right. I don't drink it, Hell, I don't even like to look at it. But these guys sitting next to me, had kool-aid in their veins.
Before I go too much further into my diatribe here I feel I need to give all of you a bit of background on myself. I'm a cynical man, a very cynical man. Some people look at a glass as 1/2 full, other see it as 1/2 empty. When this question is posed to me I pick up the glass and break it into tiny bits. Now NOONE can have ANY! I question, I observe and I especially don't believe that whatever any company does is super awesome golden care bears all the time. (all your base are belong to me!)
So as I was speaking to these bokes about what the conference held in store it was pretty apparent that they were all about anything apple. Apple could do no wrong! It was almost as if apple was their sweet little Johney, unable to do no wrong. (No miss smith, Little johney didn't bite the head off your cat, and if he did I'm sure it was an absolutely necessary action). As we spoke of all these wonderful things apple may do such as break into the social networking realm or change the iphone screen from glass to plastic I couldn't help myself to remark how ridiculous these things seemed to me. (did I also mention that I have a big mouth?). Sure enough I spent the next 20 minutes hearing how apple would change the world of social networking, how all their users would quickly flock over and change the world. Funny part is Mac users only represent maybye 20% of the user base for personal computers. When I made this remark... I was met with many, many disapproving faces.
It was like I was a strip of paper dunked into apple urine and I didn't come out the right color.
I think this will prove to be an interesting week. There is much to do, much to see and much to learn. The conference opens today with a keynote address. Assuming I have wifi access and enough room to use my 17" laptop I'll see if I can do some live blogging during the event. Also look for pictures off of the iPhone uploaded directly to gather from the event.
And I'm off!!
Edit
Here is the link for my Keynote live blog.

I'm excited about the possibilities of the iphone platform, but it has to be about tangible benefit to users. We both know that Gather is big on apple internally, but it's for a tangible reason. Developing Java on a mac is just soo much easier!
I love my hacked iphone. The games alone have provided great tangible benefit to me It's kept my kids busy when we are out for dinner on many occasions! While that makes my iphone cool, I still hope there is something more to this that is yet undiscovered.
I guess we also have to keep in perspective that much of the capability of the iphone already exists in most cell phones today. It's the sleek Apple UI ofthe iphone that creates that hype.
Looking forward to hearing more on WWDC. Good luck and don't party too much...
Will you be posting live from the WWDC? I'd love to hear perspective from someone I know (who might move beyond the hype).
I've been checking live coverage of the WWDC at CNet but will check out your coverage now.
