Finally, we have a candidate smart enough to avoid taking things for granted. Sen. Obama has, as a result of a long, grueling campaign, established some serious footprints on the national political map. Voter turnout operations may make a real difference now. Traditional GOP strongholds will not be bypassed in favor of swing states or secure states. Tomorrow Sen. Obama will start a two week tour of North Carolina (which hasn't voted Democratic in 32 years) for speeches, town hall meetings, forums and all manner of appearances. His first state visited after securing the nomination was Virginia, a state that hasn't voted Democratic since 1964.
One of the side effects of this long, hard fought contest we watched in the Democratic primary fight was that it did allow Sen. Clinton to expose vulnerabilities in Mr. Obama that the GOP will have to exploit if at all possible. The GOP has nothing to offer this nation except more disastrous war and deeper economic woe. They can ONLY try to throw mud at the one voice of hope on our horizon. But this same campaign did something else too. It allowed him to build a nearly nationwide network of volunteers and professional organizers. Now, he gets to use that network and he should concentrate on the economy and frame the debate. McSame, of course, will fall back on the typical scare tactics and concentrate on national security. Obviously, he'll target the Clinton Primary win states . . . But he may be forced to spend some time and resources in typical red states too. Again, he has no choice, having nothing to offer. With the obvious issues facing this nation, how many thinking people can see that McSame is basically saying he will protect homeless people from terrorist attacks? I'm guessing all but 20% . . . The same idiots still thrilled with George "I misunderestimated Iraq strategerie" Bush and those who stamp their feet in that cute little cupcake temper tantrum because Clinton lost.

The policies closest to Clinton's. Case closed Clinton supporters . . . if you can't back Barack, you never backed the policies . . . just the person. Some of us care more about the nation and the issues than you anti-American personality cult types.

Oh, good article.
No argument from me Ron! :)

4 months is a long time to hold on to a good rage.
Obama has a good chance to redraw some of the lines. A 50 state strategy and the money execute it can win in November.
I am looking forward to the Obama juggernaut. His young troops must be psyched up and now the entire Dem machine will be engaged.
Obama's association with Reverend Wright and other strange characters along with some of his comments leave me spell bound. I can't vote for this man.
It will likely include some...like Montana and Alaska...but this forces McSame to expend limited resources defending what would normally be a gimmee. I suspect that reality will intervene to some degree and limit some locales . . . but I LOVE he's not just writing off the typical RepubliCON bastions!
"...but McCain as protest vote or viable alternative is not a likely outcome. "
As a matter of fact, almost 20% have said exactly that. Some even here on Gather.

"I want national health care, but I do not trust Obama on foreign affairs."
You have any reason for this distrust? McSame will not cover health care. Period.
"Obama's association with Reverend Wright and other strange characters along with some of his comments leave me spell bound."
9 second sound bites taken entirely out of context from a 20 minute sermon and played endlessly work pretty good, don't they? In the meantime, I suggest (strongly) that you read his historic speech (it's not too long) and let me know what, if anything, is in it that you disagree with.

"I can't vote for this man. "
Because you really don't know this man.
"I still want somebody else. "
So do others . . . Kucinich comes to mind. Unfortunately, there IS nobody else.
"Hey, Doyle, why don't you run for president, you'd have my vote! "
LoL! Thanks, but not likely. I'm an arrogant, obnoxious little jack-*ss at times. I'd last two minutes before I'd refer to the GOP as filthy, corrupt, anti-American maggots and when an apology was demanded I'd apologize to maggots everywhere! LoL!

For God's sake - McInsane will screw up just like Bush.
Killing, war, debt. Wrong argument.
Next.
The GOP counts on fear to get elected. Nobody elese can keep you safe. LoL!

I will vote for Obama. I cannot stand the thought of a republican in office at this point. I am just not ready to see that again for a long time.

What solutions do you suggest?
I will be voting for Obama in November.
"...Clinton to expose vulnerabilities in Mr. Obama..." is an understatement. He did poorly in many sectors Democrats traditionally count on. Though Clinton is no conservative or even a moderate, she was more to the middle than Obama and her solid support showed the uneasiness in those population groups. Jewish, older voters, males, whites (esp ethnics/Catholics) and non college grads all voted heavily for her. While Obama has locked up the black vote, they vote Democrat anyway. In no states that are not already Democrat leaning, do they make up enough of a factor to change that state's likely November outcome.
McCain should be behind by double digits as Obama has dominated the news for months now, obviously he is not. Though I feel McCain to be just as poor as choice for president as Obama, I think that he will bloody Obama (with his own gift for verbal gaffes for ammunition) during this election. No matter who wins, this election promises to be a narrow win for the victor as far too many Americans are just not impressed with their choices.
Exactly. I don't even think violent often, but when I hear Clinton supporters say they'll vote for McCain since she didn't win the nomination I want to smack them.
You don't have a leg to stand on.
Please explain how, since Republican's have had nearly complete control of this country for almost 8 years, and a major control over it for almost 28 years, why are things so f*cked up currently?
In fact, the only time we saw a real healthy economy was when a Democratic President was in charge. Facts are facts, Bill, and the facts say that the Republicans have run this country into the ground! Give them four more years, and they will destroy it.
I voted for Ronald Reagan, and I kick myself in the ass now, every time I think about that. But I woke up. I see what is going on around me. I see the brainwashing that I had and people like you have. I can only wish there was something more I could do.
Bruce.
Doyle, a great article, thoughtful and just edgy enough. :)
I hope few people will be that stupid.
No. We're not socialists. Duhhh. NO country is. So? That means we have to let our people die in the streets? Our "Socialist" Fire Departments seem to be working ok for you and the "Socialist" medical coverage used by the Resident "President" can't be THAT bad if he's not dumping it for the privatized care, eh? StOOpid argument. By the way, it's LESS expensive to cover everyone, not MORE expensive . . . check you facts. While you're doing that give me the source of that 50% of our income figure you just pulled from some place where the sun doesn't shine, ok?
"If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. "
Unlike the GOP who just BORROW but spend even more, right? Regulate it? How's the FDA looking today . . . or when the spinach had E-Coli . . . or when the lettuce had E-coli . . . or when the Beef had E-Coli. They do a fifth of the work they used to do because "regulation" is a dirty word. The "Market" will balance after they kill too many people they'll lose sales and get more responsible, right? Fricken' GENIUS! In the meantime you talk about subsidizing things but I see no bitching about the very REAL corporate welfare just spewed pablum about illegals getting welfare without (shocker) any sources for any "information"
Thanks for the non-thinking echo-chamber, Fox news BS . . . (*rolls eyes*) . . . never heard THAT before! LMAO ! !
"For fourteen years, it was the Republicans who set the taxes. "
We cannot do anything because they filibuster to be certain they can point and say "Look, they did nothing!" And they're not raising taxes people . . . they're letting the absurd tax cuts for the filthy rich expire . . . as scheduled!
So . . . doesn't it strike you as a tad rascist to suggest that Obama gets the balck vote? You neglected to mention the huge turnout of new voters and the enormous appeal to the youth and the college people (though you did point out the uneducated, blue collar types did seem to go towards Clinton). You seem to think the Blue collar workers who supported Clinton will now just go McInsane instead and vote against what they believe. Naive.
Thanks Bruce, Birdie and Sheila!
"I hope few people will be that stupid."
Some will . . . not enough though!
Hi Don!
