Why I love Maine!

The Winter's long here (especially this year. But much of it is really beautiful!


Eventually, Spring goes by in a few muddy days and then Summer's here!

 
With a lot of work, my husband grows beautiful flowers and vegis (and who doesn't need a Victory Garden these days!)
  

Since we live in "Vacation Land", we don't need to go far to have fun!

 
  Even Boston's a short ride away!
 
And our back yard transforms:

When Fall comes we celebrate our anniversary in Bar Harbor :


And go to local fairs and celebrate halloween in the dark:


Winter comes again and we get to enjoy a Maine Christmas!

About the Tower...It's the Portland Observatory. Wikipedia says: "The Portland Observatory was built in 1807 in Portland, Maine. It is the last remaining maritime signal tower in the United States. Using both a telescope and lantern, two-way communication between ship and shore was possible several hours before an incoming shipped reached the docks."

Thanks, I have visited Portland with my husband for one of his conferences and we drove up from Maryland - before $4 a gallon gas - and it was very nice in the rustic areas but just more of the same in the busy urban areas. My least favorite part - 12 hours on the NJ Turnpike awaiting reopening after a huge wreck with several semis. We toured the Portland Head Lighthouse and the museum there and loved it. We saw Gloucester and what we could manage to get in before leaving because a late seasonal hurricane was coming so we cut our trip short and missed seeing the whales to get back to MAryland and then ended up visiting NJ for a looooong time in the middle of the turnpike.

It is lovely to see in your pictures but Brrrrrrrrrrrrr to darn cold for this southern boy. We get snow but it only last 1 or 2 days, and that is about once every 3 years.

I love Maine! I grew up in Mass and we used to camp and go to the beach in Maine in the summer.. but I moved to Florida because I hate the snow and cold, but those pics sure make it seem beautiful! LOL

I lived there for six months a few years back. One night we were eating at the Weathervane, and a young waiter stopped to converse with us. He told how, when he was young, his parent spent the winter in Florida and the spring/summer in Maine, and because he always beleved Maine was paradise he had decided when he grew up that was where he wanted to live. And so when he graduated, that was exactly what he did. He said, "Boy was I shocked when winter came." He'd never been there in the winter. LOL. But he did stick it out, and decided to stay.

It is beautiful. I love all the fern there in the underbrush of the forestry.

I have never been to Maine and have always wanted to go there. My family history shows that one half of my family at least came from Calais, Alexander and Fryeburg. Your pics are beautiful.

born, raised, enlisted...love to visit but the taxes have made me an exile here in the South...lived in Scarborough until I enlisted in 1979 and I gave up residence in 1998 when I realized I was being raped in taxes to support expat Massholes and New Yorkers...

Charles, Imust admit that I think the winters can be a bit too long. But I do love the quality of life here. It just doesn't come free. We still pay the lowest taxes of any other industrialized country - lucky us!

Bar Harbor sounds familiar.   I think we may have visited.  Is it anywhere near Rockland?

Bar Harbor is "down East" from Rockland (or north of!) Acadia National Park is there and is spectacular. Something for everyone, from hard core out door enthusiasts to people like me who go to see the scenery, shop, eat and absorb the environment!
