Last Day of School

Yesterday was the last day of school for my 2nd grader Jonathan.  I am amazed. They have to read an assigned book for September and do a small book report on it!!!  He has to read a total of 3 books over the summer.  I love to read and usually have a bunch of books all over the house that I am reading simutaneously so my kids see me read all the time.  They read a lot too but I'm kind of surprised at this mandatory reading program. They also sent home a packet on getting a head start on the multiplication tables for next year. 

Don't get me wrong I send my kids to private school for a reason, they learn so so much and get an awesome education.  The kid in the school in the higher grades are always winning awards on the state level for their achievements.  I just didn't expect this but hey it's ok I think I can keep him in the swing of learning and that will be better for him when school starts in Sept again.

I heard that a lot of kids get homework for the summer. My son is starting kindergarten in August, and we do about 30 minutes of work every morning. He didn't speak English, when he started pre k last August, so I want to make sure that he is ahead in the material, because I know the language might be a problem at first. On top of the language he usually gets very shy and quite for at least the first month, so I'm hoping that it will be better if he ad least know the academics.

I tend to think that when "I" was in school we did not have summer assignments and I turned out okay. But the world is so different now. Learning is now a lifetime NEED!

My kids last day is today. They get out at 12:15. They are encourage to read all summer long. Which i do that with my kids any ways. They also get a packet of school work to work on during the summer months. So, they don't forget.

Reading is almost the answer to everything. "People who don't rad anre no better off then people that can't." A great quote whose author I cannot remember.Keep encouraging them.
A lot of school systems do that these days. Even the public schools. The older they get, the more mandatory reading they are expected to do. It's really not a bad idea.
It's better than hearing "I'm bored, there's nothing to do".

I always had suggested reading lists or required reading lists. I think that they are a great thing!

My college daughter was taking ap classes in HS, most summers she had so much work to do...she didn't go with me on trips

Wow, summer homework at such a young age! It will keep him learning, of course I'm sure you have your kids doing that all summer anyway. :)
