Did Carl Sandburg ever sing?
He played guitar, he could dance,
he could hum, but, I really don't think he could sing
the wonderful songs and poems that he wrote!
I've heard recordings of him and seen him on TV.
Never once did I ever find his voice pleasing.
He had one of he most gravelly voices I've ever heard.
But, he did sing! He sang throughout his five
Volumes of prose on Abe LIncoln. He wrote poems
(songs) by the bag full. He read and played music
to his poetry. Some of his poems were a bit sing-songy,
but his admirers loved him just the same!
Yes, old Carl Sandburg was not only a bard,
but a singer of songs, a top country fair performer,
and a teller of tales. He may not have been much
appreciated in his time, but he was outstanding in
his many talents.
Old Carl could farm, write, report the news,
compose poetry, salute Chicago, and talk about fog.
Like his predecessor Walt Whitman, Sandburg saw
things as the common man did, then he wrote for that man.
He was the tops and America's people's poet for
the twentieth century!
