but all it did was put me in a trance
while you were looking at all the other girls

we never even shared more than hello
you still have nothing more to say
while my fire for you begins to glow

sad irony surrounds my loveless past
I'm sure you appreciate the sentiment
how could anyone know if love will last
and I can never infer your true intent

my heart is a ground fertile and rare
but I've fed it nothing but a pack of lies
beyond my hopes I don't know if you care
or if I can get past your cool disguise

how did it ever get this way
I can't begin to call your bluff
I can imagine what your heart would say
but would you really care for me enough

I don't know what you feel under your skin
and you don't rightly know what's mine
will we rise above or descend to sin
but I'm not one to draw that sandy line

so you just go on your precious way
with another woman on your handsome arm
I don't expect you to drop her today
and I wouldn't want her to ever come to harm

how did it ever get this way
the doubt just fills the shadows in my heart
