Wonderful memories...if not some bitter sweet ;-)
p.s. I love Shel Silverstien! I have read his stories and poems to all my kids....
Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
That was the first time I rode on an actual roller coaster. Astro World was torn down last year. I can still remember every detail of that trip.
Growing up in a Levittown-style development in downriver Detroit during the 50s presented many, many opportunities. On my small block alone there were more than 60 kids. I'm talkin' 'bout huge, roving packs of peers that had only one summertime rule: Be home when the street lights come on.
Running with "The pack" is perhaps the most succinct way I could describe my "best".
Lots of people who haven't seen us since we left Nigeria in the 70s think I'm my mom when they see me now. Be nice if it worked that way, wouldn't it? 30 years later, we look exactly the same as when we left.... lol.
thanks to everyone for sharing your memories.
Ken, I am thinking that garage memory is a good one ;-)
Rob, You are lucky to still have your aunt. Good for you.
Summers fishing and hiking all alone from the age of 7.
The first time and many thereafter of driving a snowmobile.
My first skinny dipping session. ( in a creek with 3 girls I liked and one other guy. )
BUT my most favorite MUST be meeting the love of my life and my first " lover " when I was 14. She changed my life and then was taken out of it leaving me " addicted to love " without a fix.
HEART warms at the thought of Gramma;s food and all those cousins
thanks all!
Love that skinny dipping memory!
It was likely the most awkward skinny dipping ever undertaken. ( BUT happily I got much " smoother " at it later on .
Ha Ha
Back in the 60's Tahoe was still a sleepy little resort area. I would swim in the Lake, which was nothing but snow run off and cold, but when you are a kid it didn't matter. My dad would take me horse back riding. We would go to Carson City which was a musty ghost town then. Visit friends on the other side of the lake for a BBQ. Take boat rides in the lake.
This was the best time of my life. The first time we went I was 6 and the last time I was 16.

Douglas, maybe somethings are best left unsaid! LOL!
My mom is afraid of snakes. One year she got her shoe caught on some fishing line that had a stick stuck at the other end. My dad and I saw the stick trailing her, yelled snake and I swear, I have never seen anyone run so fast! The only problem was the faster she ran, the faster the "snake" ran after her. She finally figured it out, but we were no help because we were laughing so hard!
Living on a side street in Chicago and having kids to play with spring summer fall and winter was the best. We were very rarely in the house when the weather was nice, plus we had a big park not far away that had a pool, playgrounds and baseball diamonds. I loved to go to that park and play.
Uncle Bert and Aunt Lillian planned them for many, many
years. Hired the same Grangs Hall every year but they
had different prizes for different games each year. Lots
of the prizes were hand made really cute things too.
The oldest man and woman got a prize, youngest girl
and boy, people who traveled more miles, and if it was
your birthday there was a special prize for that. There
was all kinds of summer salads, home made pickles, it
was both kins dill and crispy sweet. Block of cheese to
from the corner store best cheese aournd too. Momma
always made the huge roasting pan full of her famous
baked beans. Of course all kinds of fudge, cakes , pies,
and of course watermelon. Water was the drink back in
those days it was free!!
She was an awesome seamstress!!! I will always remember the whirring sound of her sewing machine as she made me school dresses. Believe it or not, she even made all of my prom dresses!!!!! They were so beautiful!!!!!
I just wanted to stop by since I am finally going through what is now listed as under 4,800 pieces of gather new mail that is sitting in my inbox on here.
With that mentioned I just came across either a mailing from you yourself, or someone else brought this piece to my attention. You or they felt that your creation should be shared with the gather community, which I am very glad that it was passed on to me to view. So I wanted to say Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to publish it here on gather for us to all view. :o)
As well before I leave you I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year... in 2009 :o)
