Today was my last day of my first year teaching. It was a short day, and I only had three classes, each about 25 minutes long. It was an up and down morning, for sure.
We had a staff meeting before school. There was just a five minute informational message, and then four of us who were leaving were recognized. But that wasn't enough, of course. They asked us to come sit up front. I got a crown and a scepter, and was declared princess for the day. Then, we each had a stack of presents behind us and had to take turns opening them and reading the messages to the entire crowd, which included the ENTIRE staff.
I received a couple of princess reading books "in case my students have a really low reading level at my next school."
The next package had a pair of old lady spectacles because "every English teacher should own a pair."
The third one I opened had a couple of squishy pens "in case the budget at my next school was a little short."
The next package had a mini book light "for those late nights of grading papers."
The last bag had a water bomb and punching balloon "to keep my students in line."
I also got a few cards from various people. It was really sweet. A couple people cried. June is the math teacher across the hall, and she has been taking care of me all year. She has been like a second mom. She gave me a huge hug and we both got a little teary.
A few students were a little sad to see me go. We had a pep fest today for the baseball team, which is going to state. And I got everything taken care of before leaving for good. I can't say at that point that I was really happy and overjoyed the way I was on the last day of school in high school. I wasn't completely sad, either. I don't know if it's hit me or not yet.
Thus concludes another chapter in my life, and on to the next adventure. My boyfriend and I have a moving truck in our yard, and we are loading it up. Friday morning we are driving to our new apartment. New jobs. Back to school. A whole new life.
