Such a pretty face
 God, how I despised hearing that!
You'd be such a pretty girl if...
If...if...if..
What made people think
they could say such things
to a little girl?


I never felt good enough,
pretty enough, smart enough.
No wonder I wanted to be
someone else
hide in my own world,
never share who I was.

Today I see teenage girls
trying to fit in,
be who they aren't;
Make up and belly rings,
oozing sexuality
when they don't even
know what it is.
You can have me
they shout to every male;
 Then I'll be special,
know I'm loved,
know I'm pretty,
worthy and wanted.

They starve to be thin
or keep their heads in a toilet
when nobody is looking,
when they are finally get back home;
They look in the mirror
with gaunt unhappy faces,
wondering why
they still feel alone.

I can so totally relate to this. I was told also that I have a pretty face. My uncle once said I had pretty legs, but his statement showed me as a 7 year old that only my legs were acceptable and not the rest of me. I grew and grew and grew until I reached 400 pounds. Then in 2001 I had a gastric bypass that did help me lose 140 pounds. I've gained half of that back and trying now very hard to get it off and lose the rest of my weight. Trouble is when I lose the weight I still see a fat person... not even a pretty face.

You make a very true, and very sad statement about young women today. I have no idea how they ended up this way, but the sexy little outfits for grade school kids...and the magazines haven't helped.

Yes indeed. The need to get along with others is a need that I wish we didn't have, but there it is in all it's selfishness.

And the others that push that need in the kids.

The hardest and best thing to do is accept ALL that we are. If you are unhappy with yourself- you can change. I try to keep those negative comments out of my mind. It has taken me almost 22 years to figure it out- but now I am happy.

Cheryl, you always find a way to say what needs to be said so purely and true. Thank you for opening up and sharing your creativity. You are a pretty girl!
