Forget about generating traffic. Forget about gaining profit. Social bookmarking is supposed to be fun. It is not just a marketing tool, which may intimidate people what it really is about.
Social bookmarking is pretty much like bookmarking, only that, it has the adjective "social" to it, which makes it more fun than plain bookmarking. In bookmarking, you save your favorite sites, sites that interest you, or the sites that you think are worthy to be used as future references on your personal computer. You save it on a folder, and you cannot access these sites when you use a different PC. Social bookmarking, on the other hand, still allows you to bookmark sites, save and organize them, not on your PC, but on a social bookmarking site.
When you have a social bookmarking account, you can access your bookmarks even if you are not using your own PC. All you have to do is access your account, and you can visit your favorite sites again. As the word "social" implies, you get to interact with your friends and other users. You can share your bookmarks with your friends, and you may build a peer community who share the same interests. You also get to comment on the users' bookmarks as well as rate them.
While social bookmarking is fun, it is also advantageous. The links or sites for your fields of interest can be shared to you. You do not have to go over the billions of sites that search engines flood when you are looking for references for your research. These bookmarking sites can be used as mini search engines, where you enter a keyword or keywords, and specific results will show on the page. The websites that appear on these social bookmarking pages have been bookmarked by other people, which means that they are worthy of your visit, or that they are reliable sources or references. You would not bookmark a nonsense and useless website, do you?
The next time you hear of social bookmarking, do not think of traffic. Do not think of online marketing. These ideas will just intimidate you. Instead, think of the fun and interesting websites that you get to visit, good sources of information, and the circle of online friends that you can build.
