Today Dateline Iceland (the Icelandic tourist board's e-newsletter) had an article about Europe's Largest National park!
"Iceland Creates Vatnajökull National Park — Europe's largest national park While other countries may pave paradise to put up parking lots, Iceland wants to remain just as it is, thank you. Now comes word that Europe's largest national park will be formally established early this summer. Vatnajökull National Park will be some 13,000 km2 in size, or roughly 13% of the area of Iceland. The national park will, at first, include the entire Vatnajökull glacier, as well as the chief areas affected by it. It will contain Iceland's largest wilderness area, where the forces of volcanic fire, glacial ice, water, and wind create a majestic and fascinating landscape of stunning lava beds, sand flats, mountains, and glaciers. Many international environmental protection organizations have declared their staunch support of the establishment of this park. "
I can't wait to check it out on my next trip. I'm not sure when that will be. Also, they reported that the US Dollar is worth nearly 50% more there than it was last year (woah).
Please let me know what you think about this news. I'd also be happy to answer any Iceland questions you may have. Some of the best nature photos I've taken are from Iceland.

It is great to hear about a country taking care of its natural resources.
Do they have a tremendous amount of pure glacial water, as Finland does? (That is my first question.)
And of course the no-brainer one, are the Icelandic women as spectacularly beautiful as they´re rumored to be? ( I went out with a Danish girl for years, dated several Swedish beauties, and my youngest brother married a Norwegian woman who is a knockout, but all I´ve heard is mere hearsay for many, many years about Iceland´s hidden treasures.)
As a woman, would you say this is true or the stories are overrated?
Good to see you again on Gather, my dear!

Thank you for stopping by. I hope all is well with you! I've been so busy with grad school and work that I have not had much time to Gather.
Not only are they taking care of their resources, the are using them for clean energy with the majority of the country using geothermal heat and electricity.
The water there is tasty, but I think most of it comes from underground. The hot water is naturally hot from the earth (unlimited hot showers, yay!). The tap water is as good as spring water, so before a hike you can just let the cold run for a minute to get the sulfer smell out from the hot and just drink it like bottled water. At gas stations when you go to buy a bottle of water they tell you to fill up your water bottle in the bathroom rather than buy some! (how kind of them since it is so good out of the tap).
Icelandic women are beautiful. I think it is because they stay so active and get plenty of fresh air. We did not see any fat people while there (unlike America where fat folks are a'plenty!) When a woman takes good care of herself, eats good food, and wears the fine European clothes they sell there their beauty is second to none! :)
Good to see you as well, John!
