According to a report I found on MSN, tomatoes are the cause for salmonella poisoning of 40 people in Texas and New Mexico alone. The poisoning has been linked to consumption of raw tomatoes and has been confirmed byt health authorities in Texas, New Mexico, and Indiana. Several other states including Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, and Illinois are checking into the possiblity that salmonella cases there may tie into the tomatoes. Of the 40 affected people in Texas and New Mexico, 38 were interviewed. They said they ate raw tomatoes either purchased at stores or consumed in restaurants between April 23 and May 27.
Maybe I'll have the sub without tomatoes tonight....

I just bought some grape tomatoes. I am going to wash them extra good before eating them! And I can't wait until my home grown tomatoes come in!
Most infected people suffer fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps starting 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness tends to last four to seven days.
Many people recover without treatment. However, severe infection and even death is possible. Infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for severe infections."

It was an out break with baby spinach and lettuce that happened last year.
I have 3 tomato plants but not any tomatoes yet,so have to buy them at the grocery store.
The problem with food contamination has gone WAY TOO FAR when will the government and food companies start taking more notice of how clean the food supplies are? The government is always whining about the economy, well this isn't helping and I'm pretty sure there are things the government can do to help prevent more outbreaks from occurring.
The salmonella most likely got transmitted to the truck-farmed tomatoes by means of unsanitary handling in a produce warehouse or some other point along the production chain. Unless you mulch your backyard tomatoes with (forgive me for being blunt) your own manure, it is extremely unlikely that they will contain this bacteria.

there has to be more control
Tomatoes are such a mainstay these days.
Yeah. This is scary.
Thank you for posting to I was REALLY bored ;)
I think it is bad hygiene and the fact that the produce is picked over so much by people who dont wash their hands before going in stores, the germs on the shopping carts. The pickers and then those imported ones, some country use human waste for fertilizer.
