It's been years since I have had the pleasure of actually having a garden. First I moved in with a boyfriend and we just never got around to a garden. Then, I moved out from with him and in with my mother. The summer was just too confusing to worry about a garden. From mom's I moved to an apartment, no garden. From the apartment I moved in with a boyfriend, he had no interest in a garden in HIS yard. From his house I moved in to another house but the landlord said no to messing up the yard.
Well, finally, here I am back living with my mom. By the way, I intend to stay this time!
Over the years my son has literally turned my mom's back yard in to a junk yard. The neighbor man, wanting to see the yard cleaned up has been helping to clean up. I was able to come up with a small space at the back of the house.
I planted 6 tomato plants. I planted 6 pepper plants including green bell, red bell, banana and jalapeno. I also planted a row of lettuce seed and a row of carrot seed.
Planting was later this year. The weather has been crazy, I didn't know if it was every going to really warm up. Lately we've been having a LOT of rain here in Kansas. I will say I notice a lot of growth and I do thank the rain for that.
One tomato plant is flowering and now has tomatoes growing.....I assume its the cherry tomatoes. There were 2 flowering, but one storm produced 80-90 mph winds one night and a storm window fell and broke, right on my garden. The other flowering tomato plant was completely broke off at the low stem. I actually stuffed the stem back in to the ground. I notice today the plant has come out of its wilting and is standing back up again! It must have produced more roots. I'm really glad now that I didn't just throw it away.
The other tomato plants and the pepper plants are still quite smallish, but I pray they will continue to strive and in the weeks to come provide us with some food.
The lettuce started popping up 2 weeks ago, but doesn't really seem to be getting any larger. I always enjoyed lettuce since you can cut it off and eat off the same plants all summer.
The carrots are finally noticable to be carrots growing, but I am betting another 6-8 weeks before we can eat any of those.
I usually also always had cucumbers, strawberries, peas, green beans, radishes, and sometimes even potatoes growing. I am so happy to actually be gardening again this year that I don't care how small or large the garden is. There is always next year to make it bigger and better.

but now we are back to our original Home where my Sis-in-law developed the passion
fantastically in the open space of first floor they share is a worth to talk about !!!
there is just something "up-lifting" about growing your own food and caring for the plants ......
My gal and I miss gardening too. Someday we hope to have a little country house where we can grow some of our own vegetables again.
Best of Luck to ya.
Sounds like you have a great little kitchen garden going already:)
It will be fun, if need be you can always grow some extra tomatoes in a bucket until you get the rest of the junk cleared out.
A little chair to sit in the sunshine and sit and smile at your garden is a good thing too:)
A couple of flowers - because they are pretty - maybe some basil next to the tomatoes. The joy of gardening is yours again - make the most of it - WTG!
I get the front yard and patio area and my Son gets the far back yard and the vegetables. Fair division of areas I think.
Just posted an article about my garden and your entry showed up as a related article so I just had to come over and post.
I have the black thumb of death.
so I ran up and viewed the date...WHEW....
you almost had me moving to Kansas again....rofl
